It depends whether you want to read fiction or non-fiction. Some of the fiction I've enjoyed this year are the following: Love Over Scotland by Alexander McCall Smith. McCall Smith's books are very gentle, very funny in places, and never violent. A murder mystery I read was: Full Dark House, by Christopher Fowler. It's rather odd, but interesting all the same. Harry Potter and the Dark Hallows. But you'd need to read the rest of the series to get the real benefit of this book. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, by Mark Haddon. This is a strange story told from the perspective of a teenager with Asperges syndrome. It's unusual, and has some mysterious elements, but is mostly appealing because of its off-the-wall approach. The best non-fiction book I've read this year is Freakonomics, which takes statistics and comes out with some very unusual results.

I suggest to read the "David Copperfield" written by Charles Dickens. It's a very long novel but it's very beautiful and simple. It's my favorite book and my nickname is taken from that book.
