I was very saddened to hear of a 17-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a driver who had been drinking just as he got off the bus. This accident should never have happened. What made it worse was the fact that it was wittnessed by some of the other students who were still on the bus. This driver should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

I can't imagine what the family of the boy are going through. I am sure they are mad as he**. I know I would be. Even if the driver hadn't been drinking I would be mad. So many times I have seen teenage to early 20's drivers drive right by a school bus when it's lights are flashing and unloading children. It is against the law and it ticks me off. My children took the school bus when they were small. Now my 11 year old has been walking to school for several years. But my 14 year old just started high school which is farther away so she takes the bus. God forbid something like this were to happen to her. I must remind her of those idiots that don't obey the school bus signals. I don't know why people who drink think they can drive. They think they are invincible, that nothing will happen to them, that they are concentrating real hard on what they are doing. Meanwhile their reflexes are seriously decreased. People who drink and drive should never be allowed to drive again. Nevermind these one year suspensions. They never learn so take their license away for good. And when they kill someone, yeah they should go away for a very long time.

My husband is 44 years old and stupid enough to drink and drive. Age has nothing to do with drinking and driving and knowing better. If you are a drinker, no matter what your age, you think you can do it. (Generally speaking. Don't want to offend those who DO know better.)

I remember when I was in high school sitting in a stopped school bus. We had kids getting on the bus. THere was a car that passed by, going about 60 mph. He didn't even slow down!!! The real sad thing is, the guy passing the bus, was a teacher, AND he had his chaufer's license to drive bus. (Boy, were the parent's really IRATE about this one!!!) The bus driver actually called the bus barn, and reported him, and he did manage to get a severe ticket for... reckless driving, failure to stop, AND speeding!! I love that!

In this case, patgalca, the driver was a mature(questionable) adult, who should have known better. I hope that his conscience beats him to within an inch of his miserable life.

HOW VERY SAD!! Poor boy! I hope that guy gets jail time for this and feels bad for the rest of his life!! Why didnt he stop for the flashing lights?? Why was he drunk in the middle of the day anyway!?

Drunks don't always wait for the sun to go down, copper. That makes them all the more dangerous.

Worst part is Copper, I've seen a few drunks in broad daylight. I always wondered if some had access to vehicles. Crazy stuff, but some people think they can drive while intoxicated. Time of day doesn't even matter for some of them. This guy should get the book thrown at him. Then he should clobbered outright with it. Ogre mode off.

How horrible!! I can't imagine having all the kids on the bus witness that and having to deal with the whole situation. It is sad that people cannot make wise decisions when they are drinking. I feel for all of the families. They all will have a hard time dealing with this senseless act.

I agree with you. There is no reason for anyone to choose to drink and drive. It is senseless and it is always such a danger to everyone else on the road. Humans are so stupid at times!

Absolutely right, Thoroughrob, and to make matters worse, the woman passenger who was in his car was so badly injured that she had to be care-flighted to a nearby hospital.

What a shame! Those poor kids and that boys' family. This will probably cause some nightmares for the bus driver too. It's so hard to comprehend why people that can't follow the proper road rules are even allowed to have a license. Drunk drivers should have their licenses taken away instead of just suspended. Those that kill someone else while driving drunk should be sent to jail for a long time! Come On People! School is back in session & We ALL need to watch for kids getting off the bus! And NO speeding thru those school zones! They are there for a reason!

You said it all, paidreader! Hopefully this message will reach someone who might be a potential drunk driver and change a life.

That is so sad. What a senseless accident. I agree the driver should be charged with manslaughter and given prison time.

Yes, naty, and he should never again be allowed to get behind the wheel of a car.

I feel for the family, this is another needless loss due to someone else being careless. Drivers are supposed to stop when the bus is unloading students, not try to serve around so they can keep going. Don't people realize a stopped school bus is there unloading kids?

That made my stomach flip when I read this. Why do people think buses are big and yellow? How I feel for this child's parents, and those poor kids on the bus! I do agree that this drunk dork should be put behind bars!!! Stupid people. I suppose there is only ONE good thing to have happened. Those children that witnessed it, will probably never forget, and probably will never get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated.

We don't really have school buses here honey but I thought that they were well marked and highly visible? Surely you would be even more careful around a bus full of kids rather than be downright reckless! What a horrible thing to have happened - I cannot begin to understand how the boys family are coping! I agree that the driver should be prosecuted if it is warranted - having said that I live next to a high school and when school is out they are constantly pushing each other in front of cars - I don't know how there has not been a fatal accident yet! xxx
