What has this world and the United States come to?!?

United States

My hubby posts on a couple messages boards like most people who get online. The other day someone on there posted a "WTF?" one. My hubby clicks on the post to read it and it simple has this web address : www.marryourdaughter.com Here is a little bit of info on it: "Marry Our Daughter is an introduction service assisting those following the Biblical tradition of arranging marriages for their daughters." "Q: IS YOUR SERVICE LEGAL? A: Absolutely. Within the United States girls can marry as young as 13 years old with parental permission, and the Bride Price is a custom of long standing, mentioned many times in the Bible, and as such is a protected religious practice. Click HERE for a listing of the age limits and legal requirements in various states. Click HERE for what the Bible says on Bride Price." What on earth?!! There are girls on there listed from the age of 13!!! "She got an A in Home Ec. and has read up on what else would be expected of her as a wife and is looking forward to it." Okay SERIOUSLY PEOPLE! She's 13! The prices also range from $6000 to nearly $100,000. This is one of the top 5 most insane things I've ever heard! People selling their children! This isn't thousands of years ago people when it was acceptable for 13 & 14 year olds to be married off! This must be heaven for pedophiles! So...would you ever consider selling your daughter(and yes that is exactly what this is)? If so why - and I'm not talking about adoption. If you wouldn't - Are you just as appalled as I am?

The thing I have to comment on as to why it's so crazy is this... "following the Biblical tradition of arranging marriages" and "mentioned many times in the Bible, and as such is a protected religious practice." Religion makes people think crazy ways sometimes.

Oh yeah. I think they are just using that as a cover and a mask. It has nothing to do with religion but money - pure and simple.

I agree. I think SOME people get married way too young. And age doesn't necessarily mean anything either LOL.

I wouldn't doubt if it was a little bit of both. I'd never want my 13 year old to go get married. I don't think people should get married so young anyway. I mean whatev...people do, but I don't think people should get married until they're in their mid to upper 20's anyway. and it should be love. not money.

I'm pretty sure this stuff is a lie... And if it isn't a lie... Morally reprehensible as it is, you have to understand that stuff like this has been happening since ancient times. So it's not a question of what the world 'has come to' but rather a question of what the world 'hasn't grown out of' Seriously, with today's lifespans, there's absolutely no reason for a 13 year old girl to have to get married. Especially not to some creepy old pedophile. In my opinion, pedophiles should just be shot :( Waste of tax money to catch and incarcerate them...

I agree about pedophiles. My point was that this isn't ancient times and we're not brought up like that here in the US. It's not a custom like in other countries. And I believe in those other countries they're still around 18 at least before they're married.

OMG when I have my head on more straight (not fully awake yet) I'm goin to have to check that site out to get a better grip of what it is exactly...for now though I have two questions.. #1 are we sure its not a mock or parody type site?? #2 if it ISNT how can it possibly be legal? I thought human trafficking etc was ILLEGAL in the U.S!!

I don't know it might be a fake site but it doesn't look like it. And I think it might be a loop hole in the law with marriage...it sucks.

You know I joke about that, "Hey want to buy a kid?", but never did I think there are fools out here that would do it seriously. OMG!!! Is it really happening here in the US? That is still against the law and I don't think religion protects it. I mean you can't sell babies here so why do they think they can sell a child? Maybe I am wrong, I will have to look into it. This is just sick.

I think the way they're getting around it is that marrying with a parent consent at the age of 13 is legal in most states - with age varying in others. And the girls have to actually sign too (regardless of if they feel like they have a choice or not) - and the law doesn't take into account this kind of crap because no one is expecting it. My hubby was talking about forwarding this address on to the FBI. I told him he should. Maybe the actually can put a stop to it. I'm sure too that in your jokes you would even mean selling them in this capacity :)

That's a good question!! But I don't think it is. They do have 16 and 17 year olds on there too.

wow...disgusting...its the equivalent to slavery...i'm sure if the girls were told that they were being sold to the highest bidder (assuming shes rational) would greatly disapprove of such actions. again...disgusting..

WOW! This is the first time in a long time that I actually felt speechless! I'm with the other posters thus far and feeling sick just thinking that this could be happening and especially that it's a possibility that it's legal = (

Oh! This is like a real shock to me. They are literally selling their daughters. 13 years of age? What's going on? Are these parents gone crazy to sell their daughters? How can this thing happen in real? Is there any law which can prevent such things. I do not think that it is a legal thing they are doing. Hope someone notices it and puts a ban on this site.

I am absolutely appalled! How on earth can anyone consider even thinking about that? 13? dear god the girls probably only just started her periods for crying out loud! and going on about bride price? thats tantamount to selling her in my book. I don't care if it's a biblical tradition or not, thats a site thats just begging for some serious trouble. I know that its traditional in some cultures, dont get me wrong but even then I still think its wrong. Marriage should be for love, not just because your parents decide to marry you off!

I agree I think marriage should be about love. But at least in other cultures these girls are raised knowing and expecting them to have arranged marriages. I might be mistaken but I doubt they are that young when they're actually married. So in that sense I can sort of understand or accept it. This though is just insane!

That is insane. who on gods green earth would think about selling their daughter. I have a daughter and no matter the situation would i ever do such a horrible thing. How can you say you love your child if you are willing to sell them to the highest bidder. I think our world is going down the tubes. How can we be proud the US if we can do such a horrid thing. We are no better than anyone else.
