Have you ever eaten Haggis?

This discussion was triggered by another discussion I just started. I just wondered how many people on myLot have ever tried Haggis. I know they have Burns Suppers in Canada and the US and you can't have a Burns Supper without Haggis so I'm thinking a few people maybe have tried it. For those that don't know, Haggis is a traditional Scottish dish consisting of sheep's offal, spices and oatmeal. The link below gives the traditional recipe for making Haggis. A word of warning - if you're a vegetarian or you're squeamish about body parts don't look! http://www.rampantscotland.com/recipes/blrecipe_haggis.htm Personally I buy mine ready made. Making it from scratch is not for the faint-hearted and I'm too much of a sap I'm afraid lol! So the question is - have you ever tasted Haggis? Did you like it? If you haven't tasted it, would you?

I have not tasted since I was a little girl. My father was German, and part of Scotland, you can just take a boat ride over to Northern Germany so I guess a lot of people immigrated from Germany to Scotland. Anyway my father was stationed in Scotland during the war, and he must have gotten a taste of it over there. So when we were living in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, he knew someone who made it, and we had some. I learned about the sheep's stomach part later. Oh and I loved it, I happen to love anything with oatmeal in it.

Yes Germany is not that long a trip from here really. I love haggis too but like most people I didn't know what was in it when I first ate it because I was just a child. It's not enough to put me off though.

I tried haggis many years ago when I was probably 14. It was drenched in whiskey, and I didn't particularly like it, most likely because of the strong whiskey flavour. However, I tried haggis again this summer, at the age of 22. This one had not been drenched in whiskey, and I thought it was really quite good. I thought the taste was a bit similar to black blood pudding, but I think I preferred the haggis. As I am now an avid whiskey consumer, I might just like the haggis-drenched variety of haggis these days as well. We'll see if I ever get to taste it again ;)

I'm glad you liked it (or at least quite liked it!). It does taste a bit like black pudding although I prefer haggis to that as well. I hope you get the chance to taste it again anyway.

LOL ok - I guess it's not a taste that would appeal to everyone! At least you tried it though.

My daughter went to Scotland this summer with her honor's group. They were served Haggis by some locals one evening. She said that the ceremony was awesome. She did try the Haggis, but was not crazy about the taste. I imagine that like many dishes, it would be an acquired taste. I'm not sure I could even try it once I was told what was in it! I'm not sure why those organs bother me more than say a steak...which is an animal's muscle...but it for some reason it does!

I know it's strange isn't it because if you think about what goes into things like sausages and hotdogs and other processed meat products that's often pretty gross as well. I agree it's not a taste that everyone will appreciate the first time. I hope your daughter enjoyed her visit to Scotland anyway.
