I just ate the most expensive dinner that I had the pleasure of not paying for!!

My best friend had her dad visit from Washington DC for the weekend, so I was invited to dinner with them and her mother (who lives here). We went to a place I had never heard of for a fancy schmantzy dinner. We shared two appetizers: Stuffed mushrooms (there were 4 of them for about $9) and some beef tartar. (I didn't know what it was. I like my steak rare, so they thought I'd like it. It was 4 tiny shreads of raw meat with some won ton chips for about $9 also) Then we had salads, followed by steak dinners, but my friend and her mom split a meal, so we only ordered 3. Then we had dessert, three of us did. I about choked on my soda when I saw the bill!!! The dinner was really good, but I will probably never see the inside of that place again. At least not on my own dollar. My friend said up front that she was treating, cuz I couldn't find the grilled cheese sandwich (something I MAY be able to afford in there). Anyway... the bill, not including whatever tip she decided to leave was $158!!!!!! OH MY GOSH!!! How can anyone pay SO MUCH for ONE MEAL!!!!! I was greatful that she was treating, and she was the one who chose the place. So I feel very greatful to have been invited. There was a steak and lobster meal on the menu for $49! My steak was close to $30. But WOW!!! And I thought my favorite meal at my favorite Italian restaurant was expensive at $11.99! I'm sure that some other big city's have pricing comparible to this that isn't so uncommon, but I couldn't stop my eyes bugging out of my head and my chin was on the table as I gasped in shock and disbelief, until she took it away from me. Maybe too much drama in my reaction??

I'll tell you that some places really like their food. I hope that steak was WORTH $30! I go to a steak place & they have a large filet for about $25 - its one of the priciest pieces of meat on the menu & it is a wonderful piece of meat, they have a lovely potato & salad all included in the cost. But I have also been treated at places where they don't even include the prices on the menu of anyone but the member who is paying! And you have to be a member! This was when my brother was getting ready to marry his now ex & her parents were both doctors & belonged to "The Doctor's Club" in Houston. The waiter gave the menu with the costs to my dad rather than our hostess! (I wonder how long he stayed employed there?) Dad said the prices were pretty high.

Obviously, we were there. In fact, that's where the reception dinner was held - traditionally paid for by the groom's family so I guess some how that was arranged for my dad to pay even tho he wasn't a member. It was a VERY nice dinner.

Well... The steak was good, but we have other steak houses around here that I think are better. But those mashed potatoes definatly kicked butt!! So this club, could the member take others who aren't members? I bet that's pretty pricey if they don't even print the prices!!

I have a friend who always likes to eat at gourmet restaurants when they visit a big city, and their bills are always higher than that. He just raves about the chefs and how the food they prepare and serve are works of art. Hope you enjoyed it! Was it served on fancy china using gold forks? LOL.

No, just regular plates and silverware. Normal plain glass for my Dr Pepper. Who was is who ate like this on out of town visits? I just can't see dropping a whole day's pay (or more) for one meal!!

I guess it depends on the cost of living in your area. $158 for four people doesn't sound to bad to me (I'm assuming it was $158 for the entire group). To order a steak dinner with appetizers and dessert in our area would easily cost that much. Fourty-nine dollars also sounds like a good price for a steak and lobster meal in my area. I've been to a restaurant where the steak and lobster meal starts at $150 for one person (and that doesn't even come with any side dishes - it's just a steak and a lobster). Now that is definitely too rich for my blood!!! It sounds like you had a very good meal though. That was very nice of your friend to treat you all like that. Hope you had a good time!

It was really nice. The best part were the garlic mashed potatoes!!! They were MMMmm MMMmmm GOOD!!! Since my friend and her mother shared a meal, it was basically for 3 people. I couldn't believe it!! I was really glad she paid, cuz I would have had to settle for a $9 bowl of soup and water. But she said to get anything I want.
