Would you like to live on a living boat, like we have in Amsterdam?

Living boat in Amsterdam - A very nice and big living boat in Amsterdam
Netherlands
September 16, 2007 8:33pm CST
At times I feel jealous of the people liing on these nice living boats in Amsterdam. But there are also lesser sides of the living in water, such as getting mosquitos attacking you all the time. People throwing all kind of stuff against your living boat, or even pissing against it, and such. I've been inside one of these where friends of mine are living, and I am telling you, it is much bigger living than it looks from the outside, and it feels really safe, and solid. Would like to know how many of you would like to be able to live on such a living boat as on the photo attached here:)

living boat in Amsterdam - big living boat with two floors in Amsterdam
Thanks for the info how it is called in the US ElicBxn:) and I think all of my stuff wouldn't fit in it either, but on a boat like the one on the photo it could, as these are much bigger than one gives them credit for. I also live in a house with 2 floors, so all might just fit in;)

It sounds great to begin with. But I guess anything that sound 'new' and is different from my current situation (in this case the house I live in) sounds great to begin with. As long as it is something new, I go for it. But eventually habit sets in, I get used to whatever it is, and look for something more exciting, or comfortable, or whatever. I think in the end it's all in the head.

Well, I don't know, thefortunes . I'm 48 by now, I've lived in 4 countries (for at least 3 years each), have traveled to about 25 others, have been married and divorced twice, had about 200 jobs and lived altogether in about 3,000 houses or caves or tents or apartments. I worked in about 75 jobs... So I don't think that changing my circumstances again would be the solution LOL

hehehehe, this is really funny, you have done already far too many times to even count huh? LOL You have changed so many places and life circumstances as 10 people but than in one life time, and no, since you are not yet at the end of your lifetime, let's say in the 1st half of your life time :) So you are a trvaler and adventurer too? Very nice to know you, and it's a pleasure really :) TheFortunes

Hi Pillush, and thank you for your contribution in this discussion ;) If the habit and boredom of it is your problem, this could be easily dealth with by changing you rlife circumstances again :) Simply re-locate again to a new place and new living conditions, if you have the means of course, as this is what keeps most of us stuck wherever we are settled at the present TheFortunes

bouts - bout, where you can live
One cousin of my fiancee has house boat.It really looked small and I coudn't belibe how they cann live there.but we went inside and see living room, kitchen, two bedroom with two bathroom.Unbelieveble.They have washer and dryer, phone, interent, tv, everything what we got in the house. It looks nice and probably a lot of people dream about it, but I don't think I would like to live there.I just prefer house or apartman and also cannot imagine sleeping every day of year on the boat with that typical creak sound. Also i am clithoropohib and I would die live in such a small place.

My husband & I would love to live in a boat, at least for awhile. On the River Murray, we have houseboats. They travel very slowly, but have all facilities for living. We have been on a houseboat twice, & just love it. They are very expensive to own, or even to hire. Thats disgusting that people p... on the boats in Amsterdam. PS. My two step children are 1/2 Dutch by the way.

Hi Jennybianca, and thank you for responding in this discussion :)I agree with you that these boats are quit expensive to own, and this also part of our problem. The other one is the 6 cats we have, and I can tell you the cats would hate to be living on a boat, so for now we are only talking holiday of perhaps a few weeks ;) TheFortunes

Hi my friend. Well we have a lot of people living on these on the canals in the UK too, - in fact an ex boyfriend of mine years ago used to live on one, so I do know what they are like inside - much roomier than they look from the outside! I think they are great for single people, - especially men as there isn't so much cleaning and housework needed. As a hater of housework I would be happy on one too, - but of course I don't think you could safely or happiy fit 6 cats living there, so I would have to say no for now.

i really like to know but i am not well familiar about living boats what really is the living boats how do people live out there?
• Netherlands
17 Sep 07
Hi Daring88, well, the living boats have water underneath but they do have the access to the boat from the ground on one of the sides, so it's not much different than a house really, except for living on the water instead of on the land. Don't you see it on the pictures?

I'm with AmbiePam here...I too wouldn't mind living in such a houseboat for awhile, like for a vacation period, but not all year long.

Hiya Pyewacket, and thank you for replying in this discussion too :) If there was a possibility to exchange homes for awhile I would be for it, not sure about my partner though :) In any case a holiday will be great :)

I love the water and would very much like living on a wonderful living boat. My only question is how is it if there is a storm. We have large storms where I love and the water can become very violent and scarry
• Netherlands
17 Sep 07
Hi Flowerpeople, these living boats are in the cities, and even though there are storms here as well I have never heard of accidents with any of the living boats. There are very well ankered too, so I dont think it is a problem :) TheFortunes

whoa!!! and wow!!! it is really a good picture and good true living. TheFortunes, I'm dreaming to have this kind of living mood. I like untroubled water. Much thanks for your contribution of thoughts and material. Keep wondering of how about for the power, water supply and the sewerage system? Thanks TheFortunes. ::MichaeL::

17 Sep 07
Hi Michael and thank you for responding in this discussion too :) Well, the power and gaz, and everything just like the sewage is like in all the rest of the houses, and within the city system. The toilets are also using the city's usual channels, and it does not go into the canal's water :) TheFortunes

We don't have much of that here in our country.. So im just curious. Where does the poop from the toilet go? And i think i can consider living in a house boat if that is situated in a carribean paradise...

18 Sep 07
Hi Manzano22, and thak you for taking part in this discussion ;) The living boats here in The Netherlands have running water, gaz heating, and toilet tubes as the houses here ;) And i have no idea how the living boats or the conditions are in the Carribebeans ;) TheFortunes

well, i guess that it's fantasy to live on such living boat, but to be frank i am afraid of water, hehe, maybe that's the reason why i hate swimming:(
• Netherlands
18 Sep 07
Hi Cycy113, and thank you for responding in this discussion ;) I understand the fear of water, and not being able to swim too. As a little girl I almost lost my life in the sea while in it together with my mum, and since than I've not been able to even learn how to swim. But I am not really afraid of the water, unless the depth is too much. TheFortunes

Ever since I saw the movie House Boat, which was made a long time ago, I have wanted to be on a house boat. I wouldn't want to live on one at all, but I'd love to take a vacation on one.
