An Interesting Quote

I read the most interesting quote today. I am much to lazy right now to really get my mind around it's meaning, but it caught my attention and stuck in my mind, it said, No need for reality if you have a good imagination. This quote was on a bumper sticker that had been stuck to the back of a chair. I know that I have a pretty good imagination, but it does not stop me from having to face reality on a daily basis. I mean maybe the writer was trying to be funny. Can anyone make heads or tails of this quote?

Oh, I think that is a wonderful quote! Have you read the book Don Quixote? It is one of a handful of the most popular books ever written and the stage play Man of La Mancha brought this lively story to the imagination of many people who never read the book. One of the songs in that production is called "The Impossible Dream." Probably everyone has heard that on the radio. Don Quixote had a very vivid imagination and he created his own universe, but his family thought he was crazy and blamed his odd behavior on the books he read. I think in many ways what we imagine does over time become our reality. But what I think your quote primarily means is that no matter what your situation is--you could be rich or poor, sick or well, free or in prison, but wherever you are a good imagination will allow you to rise above unwelcome realities. The philosopher Boethius said he never felt so free as he did after he was imprisoned because then his mind was free to soar. I think that is what your quote is saying too.

You are going to think that I am trying to be funny about what I am about to say. There is a mental illness named for that very thing. I know because I have experienced this many times. And in truth, it makes this quote incredibly deep. When a person is being abused they go through this thing called disassociation. Their mind leaves the reality that they are in and goes to whereever the imagination can take them to be free. This is because what is happening in reality is to painful for them to bear. Then when they look back on it, it feels as though it happened to someone else and not them. The mind is soooooo powerful that it literally turns me on. It is amazing how our minds fight for us and do what we need to help us cope with an insane reality, instead of allowing us to go insane. Thank you so much for helping me to see that. No wonder I have such a good imagination.

I quite realize what you are saying. The fact is, when we take a longer view of things, we generally find that the impossible dreamers (in the Quixotic sense) of this world turn out to be the sane ones and the ones who tried to keep them "down on the farm" so to speak are the ones who are not living in reality. That is not to say that those who escape from purposeful work by day dreaming are doing the right thing. They will not profit. But if our intention is like Don Quixote's was, to improve the world and bring justice to those who are downtrodden, then I think the sky really is the limit. Have you read a book by Thomas Szaz called The Myth of Mental Illness? With a little direction, the human mind can overcome almost anything. My very best wishes to you, Rozie.

I totally agree in my situation, because my mental illness has a lot to do with learned behavior. Like the disassociation that I mentioned. But, there are some that I am not so sure about. Of course, I am not an expert on the subject either.

Hmmmm...it's kinda hard to put into words. I mean, I understand it, but I don't know how to explain it's meaning. I have a vivid imagination too, but I also know the 'real world' is very much a reality, no matter how much you mgiht not want it to be. I think that maybe the quote means that as long as you have an imagination, you can face reality. Wow. I still don't know how to explain that better. Ha ha. I like it though.

It is quite a mind buster. Maybe I should run it by a geek and see what they think. I don't know any however.
