Is Facebook Dangerous?

I just got the tail end of a news broadcast saying that it was dangerous. Perverts were going after young childern on it. I recently joined and have connected to some people I have seen in years. One almost 20 years ago! I moved from my childhood city almost 12 years ago and lost contact with most people. I have only been online for the last 4 which is like most people I knew then too. HEHE But should I be worried? My daughter has many of her friends on there. I monitor everything that is in it. But I know lots of parents here don't even know their child has one. How do you feel about it?

Any website where you interact with others can be dangerous or safe depending on if you use commen sense or not. You can meet some really great people online. But there are also people that use the internet to hurt others. If you are careful and use commen sense. Don't give out personal info, etc. to people you do not know. Then you should not have any problems.

Yeah I do teach my kids online safety and supervise activity. Though because I do I know that other children here don't have any supervision for what they are doing online. Makes me worried. Thanks for your response.

I'm not sure I trust the news outlets anyways. Everything is always something like, 'Tonight at 11, tune in to find out why your doorknob or floor might KILL you'. They thrive on scaring people into tuning in and because MySpace has had some problems with perverts and stalkers, Facebook is an easy target to add to their scare tactic news stories.

Childern are just so niave and too trusting that the person whom they are talking to are telling them the gospel. Even women are vulnerable. The more info you provide and the more access you provide for public knowledge predators will pounce on it. I don't use Facebook I have an account but I do use Myspace and this site and I set barriers so those type of people get a hint!

I went to check mine after seeing your post nad relized I didn't save my info so I can't access it! LOL. I started about two years ago on Myspace because it was the one with all the bad rap and kids. I wanted to go and check out my loved ones' kids and at the time didn't find anything concerning except the guy Tom who is the founder had a comment from a girl who looked 12 said 16 but I doubt it. She said something to the extent. you look hot! Send me a message and we will hook up sometime! I sent him a message asking why he didn't delete it! I'm mad because it is still there!

I know, that is why I am right there with anything she does. Since I am there I can tell that some of her friends are not being monitored and their parents probably don't even know they have one. Gets me worried. Thanks!

Perverts seek out children online in almost any social application. It started out I think on IRC, where there are some real sickos to chat with if you just wait for them to seek you out. You really have to pick and choose your friends carefully on any of these, and young people need to have their activity monitored by a parent for their own safety. They aren't doing it to bug you kids, they are trying to protect you because they love you.

Exactly! My daughter knows I do it so that she is safe. There are scare people in this world.

When Facebook first began, you had to have a college email to enter an account. So it was geared specifically towards adults. Now that anyone can join, there may be some fears that people could stalk children, but I don't think it's as bad, by far, as myspace.

I think the thing that gets me a little weirded out is that most people use their real names unlike using a screen name. Kinda different that way, but as long as we are cautious and I watch them closely it should be okay. Thanks

I believe that it is very dangerous because people basically know your entire life: who you speak to, who you are in a relationship with, and your update status. There's so much information. there was a case at my university where this girl was getting weird calls from a guy who was threatening her. When she finally found out who was doing it, the guy admitted to finding her phone number on facebook. I dont think its a good idea to put your phone number, address, or anything of that sort on facebook.

Oh my goodness I have seen people put that stuff on there too. I haven't done that at all. I think the thing that gets me with it is that most people are using real names and not "usernames" like you would on MSN or MySpace. So there is a greater threat to people. Even with my last name look in the phonebook you will find me.

I think all social networking sites can be dangerous for children to use unless they are very closely monitored on them. They are a known haven for paedophiles. I guess they can be dangerous for adults too unless they are cautious about the personal information they give out. I think Facebook came in for particular criticism because people can see more personal details about members than they can on a lot of other sites. I think that was what it was all about anyway. Personally I don't use it. I have an account there - heck I have an account everywhere lol - but like most things I sign up to I haven't done anything with it.

HEHE I can understand that. I can't stay too long anywhere online... except Mylot anyways! My daughter is monitored and I know who are on her list, however I know that some of her friends aren't and that makes me worried.

Facebook isn't anymore dangerious than any other website on the internet. This kind of behaviour can happen on any site. Before we start blaming individual websites for being dangeious we need to start looking at our own website. Safety on Facebook is the same as safety on any other site, and we all need to take responsibility for our own actions.

I agree. I have looked into the site and joined myself before considering having her join. I teach her safety and what you can and cannot put out there. Ex. pictures, location, age etc.

Well I dont think myspace, facebook or vampirefreaks are dangerous at all....what IS dangerous however is parents who DON'T monitor their childrens online activity....My kids have accounts at all three places and so do I....I monitor everything they do and they know it.... Kudos to you for being a caring and careful parent!!

I am a member of facebook as well I don't know if you could really consider any sight not dangerous to be honest,, It could happen in any forum, Facebook, Yahoo, MSN, Tagged you name it...I guess if we just keep an eye on our kids happenings on the computer and who they are talking to it shall be okay.

I'm not sure how face book works exactly I have an account but I only started it recently however I know on myspace you can set up your account on private and then only people that are on your friends list can see your profile and send you messages this gives your kids protection for the weirdos. Also it is good to monitor her account as you said you do. I wouldn't let my child have any access online without supervision until there at the same age where you would let them out into the world without supervision because its virtually the world at there finger tips and this can always be dangerous.

Yeah on Facebook the only people that can see her profile are people she adds on her list. Since I monitor her I know it is only family and friends on the list. Thanks
