I just had a quick question about first finger foods for babies. What is a good first food? I want to try giving my child finger foods, but I am terrified. How do babies know that they all of a sudden need to chew their food, instead of just swallowing? Also, what is a good age to start finger food? I read that most babies are ready between 7-9 months of age. Please share tips if you have any. Thanks!

First of all never go by what books say! Your baby is ready when they are ready. It's hard to explain when they are you just know! Are you already feeding the baby Solids (Mashed potatoes, Green beans, etc?) If so then start the baby off with soft foods that they can pick up. Such as bannanas, and those snacks that dissolve in there mouth (Which are really good if you try then yourself). Cherrios are good only if the baby is used to picking them up and putting them in their mouth and chewing. Because cherrios don't dissolve fast as you think they do.

Gerber has a series of foods based on ages that will help you. If you don't want to go that rout, use a food that is very soft and will melt in the child's mouth if he or she forgets to chew. You must be careful that there is no risk of choking as your right, little ones may not be used to choking and may be short on teeth. * Well cooked plain pasta elbows is a nice soft food. Another choice is banana slices cut small. Apple sauce is a great choice.
