Do you know, live with, or love a packrat?

I live with a packrat and I gotta tell you, it is driving me stark raving bonkers. Were you aware that the practice of packratting is a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and that they can't help it. Not only that, they have absolutely no clue how to make themselves stop or what may be the disfunction that causes them to pack all that stuff around with them if ever they move. In fact the most severe of cases run out of room to store their "treasures" in and end up sleeping sitting up because they have filled every space and every surface with stuff. I think that this disorder is not only without positive purpose but also that it is very very sad. My mother and my boyfriend both suffer with this condition.

Yup, my Mom and my Grandma. They are championship packrats. Together they have 5 rooms of a farmhouse, 2 mobile homes, 2 metal storage buildings, a two car garage, a 2 room upstairs, 3 large rental storage buildings not to mention all the stuff stacked in the downstairs of their home. I have tried for years to get my Mom to clear it out but no go. They are currently getting ready to build a small barn to fill with more. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

that is just a little extreme and I am glad that my boyfriend has not yet taken it there because I just would not be able to take it. What are they packing into all their space, what do they collect I wonder. Under all of the trash I am certain that there are treasures. Stand Strong backatcha

Are you serious? I am a packrat..... :/ I keep every little thing I have (18 here and have things from the 1st grade piled in my closet)...Are you sure that it's a serious condition? I've never been able to stop my packratness, but Ive never viewed it as a problem, except for the fact that our house is a mess (my husband is also a packrat) so nothing gets thrown out...
