a friend told me that milk causes production of mucous in the throat. I don't know if it's just a coincidence but after having a glass of milk usually in the morning i feel my voice becomes a little hoarse and i have to clear my throat and drink water so i can speak clearly. Do you think my friend is correct?

I do believe milk causes mucous but I'm not sure about the throat or the hoarse voice. My daughter had to stop drinking milk because every time she got a cold the mucous built up so badly she would throw up. When we stopped giving her milk the mucous didn't build up so much. We give her lactose free milk for her cereal but when she starts to show signs of a cold we take her off milk altogether. We spent the first 5 years or so of her life dealing with these nasty barfy colds. Now, at 11, she doesn't get that sick anymore. Of course we give her Echinacea as well, but cutting back the milk has helped with the mucous build-up when she is sick.

Growing up my mother and grandmother always said not to drink milk when you have a cold or a cough, because it coats the throat and/or causes mucous which makes you cough even more. it seems true to me and when my kid has a cold/cough i cut out milk too. i dont think it will make your voice hoarse though, thats kind of odd, you mean hoarse like you've been coughing for a few days?

I said my voice becomes hoarse because i feel my throat is sort of clogged inside i have to clear it by coughing or making a hard swallow. Happy posting!

it's true that people who sing can't drink milk right before they are to sing. It does a/effect the throat. I know a guy who sings and he has told me this many times. And he sings for a living.

I think that your friend is correct. I have this problem too when I drink milk when I am sick and often it can get really annoying. However, when I cut out the milk, I do not have this problem and do not need to clear my throat as much as I would have to if I had drank milk. I am not sure of what the reason is, but due to the experiences that I have, I think that your friend is correct. Good luck!
