Which do you eat first: meat, vegetables, or starch?

OK, so you've got a glorious plate of food before you. Do you dig into the meat, vegie, or starch first? Or, are you like my brother, who always mixed it all up?

hi ladyluna, I will eat the vegetable first then the meat. Finally, the starch.

Hello Titaniumsoul, You're just like me in this regard. Thanks for sharing your eating choices. Just out of curiosity -- do you do this because of how quickly the different items lose their heat? Or some other reason? Thanks for stopping by. I hope all is well in your world, especially the job hunt! I'm still manifesting your introduction to the work world that you most aspire too. Good wishes can never hurt, eh?

Thanks for your good wishes, I eat in this pattern is because if I eat starch food first, I may not be able to finish the rest. I am the kind of person who do not like to waste food. If I eat the meat first, I may not want to eat the rest especially the starch food.

You're welcome Titaniumsoul. And, thanks for the follow up answer. Isn't it interesting how we seem to all be uniquely motivated when it comes to eating?

Hello Seagoddess, Is there any particular reason why you eat your food in this way? Preference for taste, so that some things don't get cold, or habit? I do find it interesting how very differently we all elect to consume our food. And, I'm wondering why we choose to eat in a pattern. So, I hope I'm not being nosey -- just curious. Thanks for sharing, Seagoddess.

For eating vegetables first, it's because I really love eating vegetables. I can eat it actually without starch or meat. Starch secondly to neutralize the taste of the vegetable I ate, and the meat (I'm not a big meat eater) so it's last. I just mixed up everything when the meat and veggie is mixed up when cooked. (=

Hmmm. Hi Luna. I guess I usually mix things up. Unless I have a veggie I am not too fond of. I will eat most of that up first, to get it out of the way. But sometimes I might have a one course meal or something that has them all mixed up. It gets difficult to seperate the meats, veggies and starches.

Good morning Sigma, It seems like you had to think about this. Isn't it funny how consciousness of our eating patterns/preferneces can be so varied from person to person? You make a good point about dishes that already have the food all mixed up, like casseroles. It would be kind of a waste to undo all the work of the cook, eh? (chuckle, chuckle, as I envision someone separating the peas from the noodles, from the meat.) Imagine the chef's reaction. Thanks for sharing, Sigma.

I like to eat a little of each one. If there is something I'm not terribly fond of, I try to eat that first so I can enjoy the rest of the meal...I was raised you always eat what you are given so even if I don't care for something I'll at least attempt to eat it or at least taste it. Hello Twoey, Thanks for stopping by. Reading your response reminded me of being told over and over again by the nuns, "Waste not want not. Be thankful you were born in the U.S. instead of Ethiopia. I'll bet any Ethiopian child would love to have your (fill in the blank)." I was forever pondering how to ship my brussel sprouts over to Ethiopia. Oh, and I think it makes perfect sense to get the yuckiest tasting morsels out of the way first! Thanks for sharing, Twoey!

Unless it is a casserole, I don't like to mix the different foods up on my plate, but my first bite is usually the meat and I will alternate a fork full of meat with a fork full of veggies until they are both almost gone and then dig into the starch, and then my last bite will usually be a starch. Do you know, I never much thought about it before, and had to go back in my mind to decide how this usually happens. Also, I like to eat my salad with the meal and not before, in the American style or afterwards like the Europeans. Similarly if dessert is fresh fruit, I like to eat it with the meal, too, instead of afterwards, but if it is pudding or chocolate cake or pie, then I would eat the dessert separately at the end of the meal. Since I have published an article about my "Instant Dumplings" online before, I might just add that when eating dumplings, I dig way underneath to snag a big of meat for that meaty first bite and always reserve some of the biscuit topping for last.

Good morning Drahhnn, Ah, you seem to really enjoy your food, my friend. It would seem that you make a point to savor each morsel. Which is fabulous, as you're probably satisfied by smaller portions, because you focus on taste. I believe you are the only person I know who eats a salad with the meal. I tend to follow the European standard of eating the salad last, only because I would generally substitute salad for any kind of dessert. Yet, most folks I know eat their salad before-hand. Isn't it funny how differently we all engage the process of eating? As for your dumplings: well, they must be pretty yummy if you've published an article about them. I myself cannot eat them, but do remember just how tasty a good dumpling can be. Thanks for sharing, Drahhnn. And, Bon Appetit!

Yes my salad preference is strange enough to gross out waiters on at least two continents. Speaking of grossing out waiters, once a young fellow got what I considered to be unduly alarmed when I ordered a glass of milk and a glass of grapefruit juice at the same meal. He kept muttering something about my digestion, lol.

In my case, I do just like your brother. I mixed all the three and eat whatever is scooped by the spoon. But I would have preferred to taste first the veggies then the starch. I seldom meat nowadays because I want to maintain my blood pressure to an optimum level.

Hello Ryanphil01, I most enjoy the taste of veggies, which is why I eat those first. Plus, they tend to get cold faster than meat or starch. Otherwise, you're right -- it all ends up in the same place. Oh, and I completely respect your commitment to maintaining optimal health. Good for you! May your efforts be rewarded many times over. Thanks for sharing!

I mix it up. I use to think it was weird when my younger sister would eat all of one item before moving to the next. I have certain foods that I like to fix because they taste so well together. This is not normally something that I would think about. Interesting subject.
