Do you think the US should get rid of daylight savings time? I have asked a few people and most have told me yes. That it's not needed anymore as it was put into place to save candle use. What do you think?

I think it is stupid. Just read today that pedestrian accidents exculate when it gets dark earlier. And last week on the news, of all the ways it could be helpful, do you know what they singled out as a "good" reason for it? Candy makers have found that with the 1 hour of extra daylight on Halloween, means that more kids will trick or treat which means people will buy more candy to accomodate more kids! They say their candy sales are up thanks to the time change! First, it is supposed to be more fun at night so why would the timechange help if it stays light longer! ANd second - couldn't ABC news find a better reason? So not sure how they come by it, but for that to be a "good" reason for DST, what's the point?

You would think they could come up with a better reason then that, I just don't think there is a good reason anymore. It was useful when people went to bed when the sun went down and got up when it came up, but we don't do that anymore. I also read that article. Thats what made me think to ask people about it.

Originally it was conceived by Benjamin franklin to conserve candle use. It was put into effect during the depression for the reasons you stated. It really just is not useful anymore.

Heck no,I love daylight savings time.Don't we all love it when in mid-summer it is still light out and can enjoy various outdoor activities till nine P.M.like going for a stroll or cycling or taking in a baseball game. Then there is the energy saving factor as well.Anything that we can do that is saves electricity is better for the environment and fuel consumption.

Actually it doesn't save electricity at all as most people still get up before the sun comes up and they have to use the electricity then. It use to save on that, but with work schedules not following the 9-5 anymore it really doesn't. I learned this in a class this summer. I don't mind the extra time outside, but think about it, if it got darker earlier, they could bring back drive in movies and it would get cooler earlier so you can sleep better, if you don't have air.

I think we should too..but seems like we are poor creatures of habits..carrying on old traditions without even knowing why.. Glad I know why we have daylights savings time.. I never even thought to look up the origins of this ..thanks.

This thing is not only done in the US, but also in Canada. Everytime we change the time, It took me a few day to really get back on track. Even if we go back from one hour, I'm so tired. I think they should get rid of that.

We have daylight savings time here in Canada too, but I live in the one province in Canada that doesn't do daylight savings time and I couldn't be happier. I love that I don't have to mess with the time, it's great having the same time all the time! PurpleTeddyBear.
