The Thanksgiving Meal Planning...

Turkey... - Turkey...

Have you bought your turkey yet? Do you have your Thanksgiving meal planned? Or will you be letting someone else do the cooking this year? I bought our turkey the other day...it is a 15lb. Butterball and it was about $15.00 which I guess isn't bad. My brother says they will go down the closer it gets to Thanksgiving but I think they will go up simply b/c like any other holiday the closer you get the higher they charge. So, our turkey is sitting in the freezer waiting for the big day. I'll be making our dinner (for Hubby and I) this year and since I do like to cook it'll be lots of fun. We don't have anyone over but we do like to share the day with each other. I have already planned what to have: Turkey, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Stuffing, Sweet Potatoes, Rolls, Veggie, Coconut Cream Pie (Hubby's favorite) and Pumpkin Pie (my favorite). I have a couple of things left to pick up at the store but most of it I already got. We are going to have ham on Christmas so since there is just 2 of us I didn't see any reason to cook both for each holiday. So, what about you? Who is joining you for the day? Will you be visiting with family and friends or just sharing it with your own family or will you be enjoying the day on your own? "COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS" **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

As far as I know, it will just be my husband, my son and me for Thanksgiving this year. That could change, though, depending on if anyone my husband works with that doesn't have family here wants to come over. I haven't gone shopping for Thanksgiving yet. I probably will the week before. My husband will most likely cook the turkey, but I will cook everything else. We will have stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, rolls, maybe a green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie. Elliott and I might make sugar cookies that week, too. I don't go all out like the meals I grew up with. We aren't good enough at eating leftovers, and I hate to waste that much food.

We also, are getting ready for the traditional Thanksgiving meal! Really for me I have two choices of where to go! My kids are all grown up, and they get together and plan a meal, and cook! And then again my brothers and sisters still get together at my parent's house and have a big meal also! Basically, I go to both of them, and just nibble, because by the time I get through I'm "stuffed"! I just enjoy getting together and visiting with everybody!

We have a hectic holiday season. On Tuesday afternoon, my husband will get out of class and we'll go to his parents' house. Tuesday evening, Wednesday morning, and Wednesday evening, we'll go deer hunting...and during the day time, we'll continue remodeling our house that we're moving into the weekend before Christmas. Wednesday night we'll go to my parents' house and I will make and cook the dressing. Thursday morning, I'll get up early, the hubby and my dad will go hunting, and my mom and I will cook the rest of Thanksgiving lunch...turkey, hashbrown casserole, green bean casserole, chicken and dumplings (for my SIL who doesn't like turkey and dressing), and we'll have entirely too many desserts. My grandparents, aunt, brother, SIL, and niece will come for lunch. That afternoon, we'll go to my husband's grandparents' house, he'll go hunting with HIS dad, and I'll help his family prepare dinner. We'll do Thanksgiving dinner at his grandparents' house. Friday morning, his mom will go shopping, and we will go hunting :) Busy week!!

We have not bought anything yet cause we will not be home. For once we will be having Thanksgiving at one of the kid's home. That means we wont be doing any meal planning or cooking. However we are still thinking of getting a turkey just so we can have some here. We probably will try to wait until the prices go down. Right now they are over $1.00 in some stores while others have them at 49 to 89 cents a pound. The closer it gets to that time they usually go down in price.

We will go over to my mother in law's house, and everyone will bring something. My mother in law is 84, and is on oxygen, but she still insists on cooking a big dinner, even though we all try to get her to relax for a change. Her special talent is in making pies, and she'll have a variety of them, along with cookies, brownies, and other treats. My sister in law has 6 kids, all grown now,and most with spouses and kids of their own. I've got 3 kids, grown now, so Grandma's house is always crowded. I would love to have everyone here because I have a lot more room. I will make a turkey for here just because my kids like my stuffing, and they could eat turkey more than once. I have a feeling my husband will also want to do a barbecue turkey on the rotisserie grill and invite a lot of people over.

We dont usually have turkey for thanks giving day, but we are preparing lots of food and gifts to share during this holiday. The most important thing for us is the health of the family and we reach both end of our rope.

This year my sister-in-law and mother-in-law are doing the cooking. I had thrown the idea around but the whole without a job issue has put us under tight restraint. Usually though when I don't cook (use to take turns with my mother-in-law before the sister-in-laws moved back) I make deserts. I usually make an apple (or two depending on how we're expecting) and a pumpkin pie. But this year my sister-in-law told me not to that they're going to buy them instead and all my hubby and me and her sister are to bring is sodas/drinks. I've been really bummed about this because I LOVE baking and everyone really loves my pies! I don't mind bringing sodas too - but I feel a little robbed. I don't like baking like that for my hubby and me because we don't eat them all. But I think that's exactly what I am going to do this year. I just couldn't believe they didn't want me to bake! She said she thought it was easier this way so no one had to transport anything except drinks. I told her I didn't do it because it was easy. (She and my mother-in-law live a few duplexes down from one another) Oh well...I guess... She did tell us we'd be having mashed potatoes, potato salad, turkey & ham (the hubby and I don't like turkey), corn, green beans, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and loads other thing that I can't remember right now. It's a feast! What really sucks is I don't like any of the deserts now. But I didn't want to tell her that since they're buying so much as it is. Anyway we always have Thanksgiving here with his family for two reasons. One is in the past I've had to work on Thanksgiving at least some when I worked at Walmart. And the main reason is because at my mom's side of the family they have their dinner at my Grandmothers small house which is mighty cramped with just her kids and grandkids. BUT they have my Great Aunt over and her kids and grandkids as well. That is just way too many people in that house and my hubby and I hate the large crowds. My dad's family doesn't do anything anymore. Once upon a time my Grandmother cooked and all her kids and grandkids dropped in all day (much bigger house but about the same amount of people 'cause she had 11 kids). However she hasn't done this in at least 12 years. My Dad will either come up here - if I'm cooking or go to his girlfriends parents with her.

This year, my husband and 2 boys will be going to my mother-in-law's. We always eat with her on Thanksgiving and my family on Christmas. We visit both each year, but trade dates to where we eat. Lol. 3 years ago, though, we got tired of traveling and decided to stay home. I made the entire meal for the four of us, my husband's dad and little sister. The next year, I cooked the meal, but there were a few more people to eat. We've since moved back to the town where my family lives, so I'm really looking forward to traveling 2 blocks rather than 4 hours for Christmas!

I always go overboard on the turkey and trimmings every Thanksgiving and Christmas only cause I never know who is going to show up unannounced. There is just 3 of us but usually we have single friends that will pop in last minute so I always make sure I make plenty. If, for some odd reason noone shows up, we will pack up individual meals and hand them out to homeless ppl in our town. Sometimes I hear about a family down on their luck so we share with them our holiday meal. I just cook the basics...turkey, stuffing, mashed taters/homemade gravy, mixed veges, dinner rolls. I give up on desserts cause they end up going to waste. lol

Thanksgiving and Christmas are, as you might expect, important holidays for my family. Thanksgiving might be made just a bit more for us than some because my birthday lands around it. When I was in college we celebrated it on T-day if it didn't land on one of the other days of the 4 day holiday. I will be having the meal with my brother & mother that day at my mom's residence - in the diningroom. Same for Christmas in fact. Then, I will go out to my roommate's folk's place and do it again! Well, I probably won't eat again or at least not much. In part I will do it because the roomie needs a ride home FROM her folk's place, but her folks like me. Actually, we'll probably do that on Christmas too.

We will be doing Turkey Day alone this year. The boys are all in different states and can't afford to come. Since it will just be the 2 of us, I will get a bird smaller than my husband's cat (less than 14 pounds)...LOL. Except for the pies, we will be having pretty much what you're having. I have been slowly getting things. Mostly the things I KNOW the store will run out of. At least I have my good old cast iron roaster to use. I get to cook for at least one son at Christmas. Depending on my husband's mood, we might have a small turkey and a ham. At least I will have one of my 'garbage disposals' here, so I don't expect many left-overs. Mom's cooking again....mmmmmm. When I cook too much for us on the holidays, I make TV dinner packs. Then we can have holiday tastes after the holidays.

My dinner is the same every year. I buy the biggest turkey I can find. Last year I had a 25 pound turkey. I hope to get that lucky this year. I will have cranberry sauce. The ham will be fixed the night before along with candy carrots. My husband will cook the turkey as well as make the mashed potatoes. I will make the sweet potatoes with marshmellows that my daughter loves. There will be deviled eggs and of course biscuits. For desert there will be pumpkin pie and cheese cake this year. I am sorry to say that my dad will be in the hospital during this time so every thing will be made into plates and taken to the hospital for him. All the left overs will be made into dinners and frozen so that we can just pull out a plate and pop it in the microwave and eat. Ziplol has some great divided dishes for making home made tv dinners. Happy holidays to all.

I've seen so many Thanksgiving posts about what folk are cooking and eating and who's coming over and where it was last year and who's doing it this years and who's doing it next year. It all sounds so wonderful, I just wish I could participate but we who live elsewhere and don't celebrate this holiday are left out. Not only do we not celebrate this holiday but the discusiions are directed only towards those who do celebrate it. *sigh* lol

Thanksgiving this year will probably just be me and my son and I'm the only one of us who eats ANY Thanksgiving foods. I'm still going to make a turkey, because I want to and because I'm working on a collection of recipes using leftover turkey and ham. I'll probably buy my turkey in the next week or so. The grocery store has turkeys for $6 (15 lbs and under). I don't know what else I'll be making, but I'll probably make mini cheesecakes and freeze them (since my recipe will probably make close to 2 dozen).

I got my turkey too and hubby and I plan on having Thanksgiving with my parents. The way it looks, it'll be just us four unless the rest of my family decides to come down here since they're too far north to drive up. We plan on having turkey, stuffing, yams, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, corn on cob, cranberry sauce, rolls, poppers, green onions, apple and pumpkin pies with cool whip. Yummy!
