I come from a musical family. Both parents were in show business. Mother was a dancer and singer and my father was also a singer and drummer. Later he played the bass fiddle. Met alot of interesting people over the years, mostly local musicians. I took many years of piano but didn't absorb what I needed in order to move right into a musical career. The extent of my talent is being able to play "chopsticks." Pretty lame don't you think? Any others out there have this kind of background or know another family with a similar story or lifestyle?

Hi carol! My mother when she was younger taught the piano. She also played the organ in the local church. I am the eldest of three children and almost as soon as I was able to read I was 'pushed' into learning to play the piano. I was so pleased when at the age of almost seven I broke my wrist and couldn't do my practising and from then onwards never had another lesson. Of course I regret not having learnt now. Whenever I hear certain pieces of music by Gershwin or Rachmaninov being played I have tears in my eyes because that was what my mother played so frequently at home when I was a child. My son from the age of eleven showed an inclination for music. He started having lessons to learn to play the drums and I'm so proud of him now as eighteen years on he now has set up a business on his own. He renovated and sound-proofed an old warehouse and turned it into 'practice rooms' for local groups here which he rents out hourly. He also plays the drums in three local groups, each of which plays a different style of music. By the time he was fifteen he had his own group which played cover versions of my favorite artists from when I was younger and almost every week-end his group was playing at one local venue or another. At that time as he was so young of course it was his father and me who had to accompany him to these places (which also meant having a larger car because a full size drum set wouldn't fit in a normal boot). So though my own stupid fault one generation got left out but now he has carried on the musical side of the family.

Hello dear carolbee. You have a very nice family background of music. But I am sorry to say that my parents do not understand music at all. My elder brother used to love music very much and was active in recreational activities at school. My brother is good at playing the violin, erhu, mouthorgan and flute. Influenced by my brother, I also love those musical instruments, but I am far less good than my brother as I only learned it by watching my brother and self-study...

Learning an instrument by self study is difficult. I admire you. I really have no musical talent. I did love listening to my mother sing to us kids and also my father. Both were very good. Thanks for responding.

Hello carol bee. It is so nice to be born and brought up in a musical family, in which you can develop your music talent. Music is the very thing that is enjoyed by people of different ages and walks. I don't have such a family background. My father is a technician in scales while my mother is cadre in our living community. I hope to be able to sometime watch your performance on Youtube to enjoy your music. Thanks, carol bee.

Actually, I have no musical talent. Wish I did but the interest, at age 8, wasn't there. My parents more or less forced me to take piano lessons and I had no interest whatsoever. Wanted to be in the park playing baseball with the boys!

Whether you want to continue improving your skills or not is a direct result of your genes, and a crucial influence by your environment. If the instruments, music, and fundamentals were available, it may be very possible to spark a talent or ability. You will never know until you actually sit down and try to learn.

Actually, I still have no interest in music other than listening or dancing. I did have a good musical environment but it just didn't spark my interest. I agree with you 100% and thank you for responding.
