I really feel sorry for our school kids these days. One day the news is full of shcool shootings and then today some poor little girl gets suspended for giving classmates a hug! Talk about from one extreme to another. I feel that the punishment did not fit the crime in this instance. What are your thoughts?

I think that is shocking - there is not enough balance nowadays. Kids are constantly sent mixed messages and it really confuses me never mind the kids! xxx

Very true! I would think that the responsible school personnel would be pleased to see a child showing friendship as we see and hear too much about bullying and meanness, not to mention downright cruelty and murder in young people.

In my family we give hugs. I cannot understand what is wrong nowadays. Are students supposed to hate each other? No wonder there are school shootings, students are not allowed to show affection and that leads to hatred. Do they want to produce humans or to produce robots who look like humans but who have no emotions?

They are teaching them not to feel. It seems you cannot get overly angry or be too loving. You have to act and feel the same all the time and I am not sure how good this is. I do think there are dangers in the school, but hugging someone is not worth the punishment.

My daughters primary school brought in the ban on hugging, kissing & arms around one another when she was in year 7. I can't remember the exact details. Something to do with it being inappropiate. They would never used suspension though for breaking this rule. That is extreme. Another school over reacting.

Cruel world what can I say more. The real crime today isn't punishing right I think. We have a idiom in my country in english it is like this When somebody get burn from the soak (something to eat)then he blow to the yogurt. i thinkthat we must encourage our kids to love each other like only them can do.

In all honesty, if I had children they would be homeschooled. I'd never send my kids to regular school or even private school for that matter. There are just so many fruitcakes out there...teachers, principals, janitors, bus drivers, ect. I'm not saying all of them are nuts but how are you supposed to weed them out? I'd rather teach my kids at home where I know they are getting an education and not being mistreated or abused or neglected. I think that's carring it a bit too far. Punishing a kid for trying to be nice, sheesh! what the heck are they teaching them these days? To be mean and hateful? The little girl is just that, a little girl for heavens sake! Give her a break principle!

/facepalm on both counts Definitely Zero Tolerance run amok. Especially if the hug was true and everything was fine. If it was something awkward or forced upon then there should be some intervention. But suspension for a hug between friends? Geez... -_-

Yeh that is a joke of a rule. I mean kids are smart, you don't want to start making rebels out of the most nicest kids. It's like they are always trying to teach peace and discipline in school, but in a way they are wanting kids to do bad so they can have an excuse to punish them. it sets a very bad message and will most definitley make kids even more less obedient. This world is getting more and more redicoulus everyday. :(
