4 Out of 5 Americans Are Dissatisfied...

Only one out of five Americans are currently satisfied with the direction in which our country is going. I'm curious to see how myLotters fall in this "statistic". Are you the "One" who's satisfied or are you one of the overwhelming majority that thinks we could do better? Count me among the "Four"! Annie

Which direction is the country going? If you're liberal, you fear it's going to the right. If you're conservative, you fear it's going to the left. Either way you fear it's facing a dangerous enemy. I wonder what those that are satisfied are thinking? Maybe they trust that in the end it always works itself out? Or maybe they're satisfied with their own lot, so assume the country must be going in the right direction? Beats me.

I forgot to include those that are neither liberal or conservative, but see both parties as bad as each other, and government, as usual, in a mess and getting worse. (This one's for ThePro').

*chainsaws through a wall* Did someone call my name!?!?! =D I'll put my two cents in this response for now. Yes, I'm probably one of those four of five. And yes I'm not satisfied with either "party", just a nice lineup of empty shills and do nothings. I've said plenty of times a lot of politicians should be put on trial for gross fraud, theft, extortion, and a good number of them for treason. As for those that are satisfied, hey that's them. Some may like the administration, others may just like the fact the country still exists (for now) and they can live free. And then there are those who don't care about any of this, or are just me-me-me, so they are satisfied as long as their "me" is generally happy. -_- You are on the right path with this part of the exercise Brave.

I believe it would be very hard, anniepa, to find hardly anyone among middle-class people who are happy with the direction in which our country is moving. I know almost everyone I talk to feels the same as I do. At this point, I'm thinking that I might be able to run the country better.[smile] Now that we are getting closer to the actual election time seems to have practically stood still. I wish I knew how much longer we will have to suffer.

The same goes for everyone I talk to. The middle class is being eliminated slowly by the growing disparigy between rich and poor. What do you say you and I run as a team? I don't care if I'm the Prez or V.P., heck we can flip a coin for it! I know you and I could do better.(Big smile!) Annie

Using a general static like 4 out of 5 is misleading. Only on in 10 are satisfied with congress whereas 3.5 out of 10 are satisfied with the way President Bush is handling things. You can say staticly that 3 timesore people support the president than congress. More people like the way Republicans are handling things better than the Democratics are. To draw any conclusions from this you need to know who was asked and what they were asked. All too often only the summaries or conclusions are given and you have no way of knowing what it means.. For example most people when asked feel they are doing better now but feel their neighbors are not doing as well. People feel that schools are doing a poor job of educating students, except the school their children attend. That school is doing a great job. Such a general statement is meaning less.

Annie I was not saying that one side or the other is doing a better job. I was pointing out how statics can be misleading or used to give the wrong impression. You have to know who is being questioned and who is in the group. Remember the exit poles at election. Not every person who comes out of the voting booth is in the pool only the ones that want to be in it. If I walked into a bar and did a survey on smoking in bars and restrauants I would get one set of results - probably favoring allowing smoking in such places. If I went to a health club and asked the same questions I would get a totally different set of results. Both groups would be considered random groups because I was questioning everyone in the establishment and was not pre selecting them. My point is to beware of the use of statics.

Yes, I do see where you're coming from there. As I've said in this or other posts I've been polled myself on several different occasions and it really is laughable how they ask certain questions. They kind of lead you - or try to - in the direction they're hoping to go. And both sides do it. I like to post about these polls that get so much airtime just to see how answers and comments here compare with the results reported on the news. It's not rocket science by any means, it's just an interesting topic to discuss. As for exit polls in elections, I don't pay any attention to them at all because who's to say if people are even telling the truth? I think I might try to throw them off if I were asked as I left the polls, just to have fun with them! Annie

The latest poll I heard has Congress and Bush pretty close in their approval ratings, something like 27% to 25%; also, the Democrats in Congress have a "slightly" (they didn't say how much) higher rating than the Republicans or Congress as a whole. To say more people like the way the Republicans are handling things than the Democrats is more than a stretch. As far the the "most people" who feel that they are doing better, I must be hanging out with the wrong people because I sure don't hear that! I have heard those exact words from Rush Limbaugh, however, and I'm sure he and his neighbors are doing just great! Annie

Well I am happy with my life but the country is going down. There is a big divide between the people and the government. I don't know if we will ever get back together.

All I can say is then, is that the "one' in five who is satisfied with the way things are going in this country must be living in the twilight zone...LOL I haven't a clue how Bush got re-elected and I certainly didn't vote for him. A few days after the last election and Bush had won, I bumped into this neighbor of mine and she asked me, "I'm so glad he won again, isn't he the best president we've ever had?" I wanted to gag, but just smiled at her, so I guess she IS in the twilight zone..LOL..Yes count me in too, as one of the four who isn't satisfied

The best president we've ever had...wow, the twilight zone is further out there than I realized! Oh well, to each his (or her) own, I suppose! Annie

Hi Annie, Like a few other people on here, Im not unhapy with everything, but a large majority of it. So you could count me in on the 4. Its almost like everything is linked to everything else and no matter what its sort of getting worse. Mainly high gas prices and the increase in everday foods; milk, bread, fruits and vegetables, even the increase with detergents for crying out loud. But anyway, its a huge circle of events pretty much. Im more unhappy than I am happy about it. While so many see its a great place to be, Im begging to differ! Bay Lay Gray xx

Great post, BayleighGray! You're so right about everything being linked and it's the price of the things we need that are rising so much. There are those who insist our economy doing great; I'd like to know how and where! People are working harder than ever and not keeping up at all. Once they put gas in their car to go to work then put food on their table and heat their homes, there's not much left over, now is there? I know lots of parents with young kids through all the activities my grandkids are in and I know for a fact they're really hurting. These are hardworking families too, not people looking for something for nothing from the government. What a world! Annie

When I was a kid or even in the early years of my marriage $50,000 per year seemed like a fortune. It sure isn't these days. I know many people get by with less, but it isn't the high-living income it once was. Basically unless you have a high enough income to really benefit from the taxcuts and to be able to afford everything you need with maybe a few extra bucks to "blow" or if your income is low enough to qualify for some government services you're left out in the cold - quite literally for many this winter, I'm afraid. Hi Annie, thank you very much! Yeah if this is a good economy, I would sure hate to see it when its bad! Its very tough to make it, unless your raking in $75 grand a year or more. I read an article the other day on a woman in Miami with 3 kids who couldnt make it on $50 grand a year. I was shocked! I thought thats a nice income really. But I guess with feeding 3 kids, rent, school items, and things like that. Its not really going too far. I know our single income is just barely paying the bills, and Im more frugal than I have ever been! Its depressing really. It cost money to drive to interviews and have nice looking clothes to wear, then you dont get the job so much money wasted. Sort of my problem right now. Im trying to stay positive and be happy, but it sure is a tough time of it! Bay xx

Lets see, with the congress you have and the senate you have elected, the United States is going to hell in a hand basket. Note I did not mention the President, it is the congress who passed those horrible laws that would lead to the persecution of Christians who stand up for what the Bible teaches. I wonder do the Congress and Senate want God to obey them?

"FOUR" But where exactly is the country going? I think that's the biggest problem I'm having...everything is so all over the place that I don't think anyone knows which way is up (or left or right). If I align with the right I'm potentially going against years of struggls for women, but if I go left I'm leaving behind the very things this country was founded on.

Annie, I am having a great time reading the replies to your thread! I am also one of the "four" and also do not trust "one party or the other" just because they are this or that. We have been herded and coerced for FAR too long! We are NOT being heard, and we are being stifled! In Govt class I learned the US Govt is supposed to be by the people, for the people. Time to reclaim OUR RIGHTS and stop catering to the "by the leaders FOR the leaders and in SPITE of what the people say" process. Great topic!

I am one of the five. Rather than looking at the things wrong with America I look at how much it has improved. In the past we had trouble with racism. Racism will never go away, but it is slowly declining and soon racists will not speak out about their views in fear that they will be considered fools. Right now homosexuality and abortion are big issues. Ten years the majority of those who support the two would not dare say it in public, now people are fine with it. And much like racism they will only decline farther. The war is an issue of course, and I agree we should not be in Iraq. But Bush will be out of office next year and things will change. People are so busy thinking about what's wrong with our country to bother thinking about what's right. And what's wrong will change. Twenty years from now homosexuals will be open and have the same rights, racists will hide their ideas in shame, and religion will not be a big issue.
