a few weeks ago my daughter lost a tooth. When she was 4 she had her two front teeth pulled by the dentist because she had banged them on the tub and they became abcess.. well when she lost that first tooth on its own the toothfairy gave her $3.00 for her tooth. My husband kept saying wow the tooth fairy must be making some serious cash to deliver $3.00 per tooth when he was younger he recived $.25 etc etc.. Well this evening she lost another tooth and when she was excited that she was going to receive another $3.00 my husband began picking on her and said that she was only gonna get a dollar this time,. that the tooth fairy was feeling bad that she didnt recieve any money for when the dentist pulled the first two.. thing is hes serious! he said to me it was a one time deal that she should only get $1.00 per tooth from now on.. My question ( s) is/ are what does the tooth fairy in your house give per tooth? does the age of the child have an effect on the amount? What did you get when you were a child from the tooth fairy? and if $1.00 is a resonable amount is it fair to switch to that now that she has already recieved $3.00 for the first tooth?

The tooth fairy gives $1 here. I don't think we could afford more. We had 3 kids right in a row meaning they are all going to be losing teeth left and right together. In the last 2 months my oldest daughter has lost 3 teeth and my son lost 2. I had to use the last of my quarters I had saved from when we used the laundromat to give from the tooth fairy. We don't usually have cash on us and lately we have been completely broke (went 2 weeks with no money to spend at all--which is when my oldest lost yet another tooth). Now they both have another loose tooth. Next year our middle daughter will probably start losing teeth, too. I don't remember what I got as a kid. I think it started at like 25 or 50 cents and eventually we got $1 per tooth.

thank you for your comment. I am in the same boat as of right now finace wise... we usully go paycheck to paycheck and count change ourselves. adn we too never have cash on us... we have a ashtray full of change in the car i told my husband that we will just grab four quarters out of that for her.. that she will think 4 quarters is more then 3 dollars anywyas... either way its just gonna go right into her piggy bank... I think $1.00 is plenty

Yes, my son thought it was much cooler to get 4 quarters then it was to get a dollar bill. His first tooth got him the paper money, the second was quarters and he was going crazy. I tried to explain that it was the same amount but he didn't care. He is a nut.

A dollar is a good amount to give to your kids. If you don't have the money dont put any money under the pillow and make up a storie why the tooth fairy was busy thats what my parents did.

$1.00 is a reasonable amount, when I was a kid, I receive 50cent, but for my boys, they always receive $1.00 everytime they lost a tooth.

Well, I don't know about the average amount that a tooth fairy gives...but I guess it depends on what a family can afford. The tooth fairy sometimes leaves little gifts instead of money (which is what I did with my son). You can always tell your daughter that only the first tooth gets $3 because it's special..the rest of the teeth get $1 or a gift (it's in the tooth fairy rule book!)

Exactly! It's the idea of the tooth fairy that matters! But that didn't really work with my son..lol He took his gift and that evening gives me a hug and tells me 'I know there are no such things as tooth fairies and you are the one who gave me the gift. Thank you.' One of my friends was caught because her daughter recognized the tooth fairy's handwriting and her mother's matched..lol (the tooth fairy had left a little note).

I used to receive only 25 cents per a tooth as a child. I think if you only leave a $1.00 it won't be a big deal. She's young so its not like she really needs or understands the concept of money. I think the excuse her dad gave her was good. Its too bad he already said it though, because if she's smart she'll put two and two together. It depends on her age though. How old is she?

I have always given my kids a dollar per tooth. When I was a kid I only got 25 cents. I always give the same amount of money for the teeth no matter what the age of the child at the time. As far as what to do about your child that is up to you but I would just explain that the 3 dollars was for all three of her teeth not just one and that each tooth is worth however much you and your husband have decided to give her.
