How did you react when you lost your job?

The company I was working for screwed up and has to close. My employer told us at the meeting last night that he could keep us employed just for another month. Naturally, it came as a shock. I could hardly sleep last night; I was that upset. I know losing jobs and finding new ones is a common phenomenon of the modern consumerist world. But I like to stick to one thing, and I thought this was one thing that will last. Have you ever found yourself suddenly unemployed? How did you react?

Thanks for your response, ayou! I understand exactly how your sister felt. I feel much better now, but yesterday I got into a real panic and thought it was the end of the world. :)

I'm sorry you are facing this situation, and about to be retrenched from your job soon. If I were in your shoes, I'd feel a sense of shock, uncertainty and dejection. It is heartbreaking to lose a job you enjoy doing for a company you enjoy working in. In this modern world, jobs are not considered iron rice bowls anymore, and the only constant is change, even if we do not like changes. It can be unsettling, I know. But at least you are not asked to leave because of poor performance or behavior, but because the company couldn't survive. So if it is any consolation to you, you can leave holding your head up high, and at least feeling proud that you had worked for this company till the end when it decided not to continue operations. I hope your company will give you some good retrenchment benefits for abruptly terminating your employment with them, and even help staff find new placements with other companies within the same industry. That may help you and your colleagues move to other companies and still stick together. It's good if people you work well with are still together working elsewhere. If this assistance is not extended, then I hope you will be able to find an alternate job quickly after your last day with your present company. My best wishes to you.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, lexus. I am afraid there are no retrenchment benefits. Neither can we hope to find help with new placements. We are out, and two days after getting the news, I find that it is almost fun to be out of that warm secure position I enjoyed for nearly one and a half years. The world is big and there are plenty of interesting things in it. I just got too attached to this company and the friends I made there.

I'm sorry you are leaving without retrenchment benefits or help to find new placement. But do keep a positive mind and outlook (yr name says it all!!), take it like you wanted a change in your job and go out there in search of greener pasture. If the economy is good, employment rates are high and your skills/experience is valued by employers, you might just find that an alternate job may be around the corner. You never know...your leaving may be a blessing in disguise, if the next job you land turns out to be a better one with higher salary and benefits. So look forward (instead of backwards) and seize the opportunities available out there.

Oh those memories! This happened just after I got married. We both were hard-working youths with stars in our eyes and at 24, we thought our jobs were enough to see us through life. Two months into marriage, my company served the notice for closure. We both panicked! I was desperate to get a job, any job (his single income wasn’t even nearly enough). Finally I got one at a hole-in-the-wall office with a meager pay (but something was better than nothing). You can’t imagine my depression those few months. Most of the days, I did not want to go to work. I would turn up late and leave early most of the days. I hated the very thought of sitting whole day in that cubby-hole. Finally I left it and again I was without any money. I did not even have money to make phone-calls to prospective employers or send letters by post. I know how it feels to have your company wind up. Its bitter, its depressing, its panicky. But since you have one month’s time in hand, be prudent in your search. Don’t land up like me somewhere where you cant even sit for one singe day peacefully.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience, sudiptacallingu. Those must have really trying days for you. I do remember a time I got into a job just because I had to get into one. I lasted there for a month, and I hated every minute of it. I hated having to stare into the computer and slog away for more than the customary eight hours, and I remember going without proper food because there was just too much work and the pay was lousy and so was the boss. It taught me a good lesson--never get into a job just for the heck of getting into one. It won't last and it will make you miserable.

I had been laid off a couple of times. I was very sad when it happened with my first job because I loved it so much. But then you learn to move on. Taking on different jobs makes you learn so much more and can be a very enriching experience. So don't worry. You'll be okay.

Yes, I found myself suddenly unemployed. I was upset for two weeks, too upset to go looking for a job. But I missed opportunities that I may or may not have gotten. However, when you're crying or depressed, it's not a good time to look for a job. So what I'm saying, I guess, is that I wish I could have started hunting for a job immediately, I might not have been out of a job so long. Opportunities don't happen very often up here. Once I had composed myself, most of the jobs in my field weren't being offered anymore and I ended up taking a job at half the amount. Mostly, it was bad timing. If I had been let off two weeks earlier, I could have recovered and tried all those opportunies. Of course there is nothing saying I would have gotten any of them. I'm sorry for your job loss. My job was supposed to be a four year grant. Only one year. Hope you find a good jobs and all the openings you're interested in come when you're up to going for them. Take care and please let us know how you're doing.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience, writersedge! I understand how you might have felt. Today is the second day after I heard the news that I will no longer be employed by my company. I must admit that I have recovered fast. I am applying to posts like crazy, and I will let you know the results. Thanks again for your response.
