Nothing will happen to you, but you will get a lot of unresolved discussions which will just sit there until you award the best response. It encourages people to continue responding and to award them for their hard work, we all need praise and acknowledgement and seeing that your hard work as been rewarded with a best response makes you feel good inside! I have a lot of discussions which haven't had any responses so unfortunately I cannot award best response and some of them are months old! I usually leave it a few days before I give the award unless there is a very good reponse and I will mark it for br straight away.

It is not mandatory but it is helpful. If people have a good response and you mark it as the best reponse they will get a higher rating. I usually try to make sure I have no unresolved discussions, everyone who even makes an effort gets a plus unless they say something to offend me. Then I just try to overlook it and think maybe I misunderstood what they were trying to say, you know, give them the benefit of the doubt.
