Why is my computer going so slow?

I haven't really used my desktop pc in a while, but now that I moved it upstairs I've been using it a lot more the last few weeks. Well, yesterday it seems now that this thing is running so slow. I deleted a bunch of software, ran defrag and also ran virus scan with AVG-- which found 5 viruses. I deleted and healed the viruses, ran adaware and then reran the virus scan and everything seems to be gone now. However, my pc is still running slower than dial up! I've cleared cookies and temp files also. I thought it was our DSL acting up, but this is the main PC for our internet and the other 2 pc's on our network are running okay. What else can I do to fix this before I decide to format it and start over? Could there be another virus on here that I dont know about? Does anyone know of another free virus checker that I can try in case there is a virus that AVG doesn't know about? Thanks for helping!

try getting a bigger hard drive or delete the programs you dont need and then defrag your hard drive

I never did figure out what was wrong with it-- but I ended up using system restore and it fixed the problem. I hope whatever it was, it's gone for good. Thanks for your help!

I run ccleaner on my laptop and I'll go download it now for this pc. Right now, I can only get the mozilla browswer to work, IE won't work. I'm running WIn XP on this pc. When I hope other things, like microsoft word for example I can count to about 40 before the pc even responds to me pressing the icon. There is something really wrong, and I don't know what ;(
