Any helpful software out there?

Okay, so I'm trying to teach myself to play acoustic guitar. I've always wanted to learn, and my son has one that we bought him for xmas a few years ago that is doing nothing more than collecting dust. What a perfect opportunity! Except ... I don't have a clue what to do with it, lol. I seriously just can't afford lessons. Not right now. A friend of mine taught himself, and I know he used some software to help him figure out chords and such, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what it might have been. And no, I can't ask him what it was. Anyone know of any helpful software for a beginner like me?

Thank you, I appreciate you looking. I've seen a few of these while wandering, but what I was hoping for was someone experienced with any particular program. I don't want to get into a program only to find there was one that would have been a much better teacher, if you know what I mean. :) Thanks for looking, though :)
