In the first test of the Investec Series, Sanath Jayasuriya has retired from test cricket, and Michael Vandort and Upul Tharanga will have to find two new opening partners. What do you think?

It is said that the Sri Lankan Cricket board had given an ultimatum to Jayasuriya either to retire or that they will drop him. He chose to retire!! I think at 37 there was really not much left in him to offer anyhow. I think sooner or later Sri Lanka had to look for a new opening pair. Now with both Atapattu and Jayasuriya retiring close on heels of one another, the younger boys Vandort and Tharanga would need to stand up and be counted!! Cheers! Ram

That's an interesting observation and a correct one. But, I think they have given a long leash to Jayasuriya as well as to De Silva and Ranatunga before him. These were doyens of Sri Lankan cricket who were not willing to step down. I do not think there is anything wrong in selectors asking a player to make the tough decision if he does not make so. Even Aussies made both Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh do the same. The only thing is that the news there did not make much fuss as they are very professional about such things. Cheers! Ram

Vandort established himself after some power hitting in T20, while tharanga has been fairly consistent in past, i dont know exact reason why he is not in squad at the moment.

I was surprised after hearing the announcement of retirement of sanath jayasuriya in test matches...I think he should continue for a couple of years.I think he has good fitness....By this srilanka will lose a destructive opener and i think to fill his place will be a great challenge to srilankan selectors. I think he should receive a great applause from his team members....
