I always tip 15-20% of the total bill and anybody that doesn't tip a server should be ashamed of themselves. A server only gets paid 2.12 an hour and their motivation for providing you with great service is to earn a tip. So, you are really paying the server to take care of you. A server is almost like a subcontractor of the restaurant. They make use of the restaurant's food and beverages to serve their customers. In return, the restaurant lets them sell the food to earn their salaries. So if you don't tip, the server is effectively working for free. The restaurant still gets its money and the customer still gets their food but the server gets nothing. So before you walk out the door without leaving a tip to the server, you should consider if you would enjoy working for free.

It is not compulsory in middle and small restaurants. It is a courtesy in big hotels where people pay 10 to 15% of the bill amount as tips. I do not pay the tips.

Yes, you paid for your meal, but the tip is for good service. It is expected and appropriate. Servers do not make a lot of money in most places and the tip is part of their income. If you're too cheap to leave a tip, you should eat at home.

I do tip, and I tip well if the service has been good. The way i feel about it is simple. If you choose to wait tables, you know that you're really working for tips. If you do a good job, clear dishes as they are used, refil my drink, check in but not so much it's bothersome, are friendly then I will tip you at least 20%. If, on the other hand, you are rude, slow, leave dirty dishes on the table, don't refil my drink, etc then I will leave you less of a tip. It is rare I will leave NO tip, but it has happened. I waited tables for years, so maybe I just expect more out of wait staff. But because I know how poorly they are paid, and how hard their job is, I tend to overtip.

I tip well, unless my server makes the mistake of staring at my wheelchair like we belong in the Black Lagoon. Then I might leave nothing.
