do you? this is one motto that one of my office mates taught or instilled in me. no matter what your mood is for the day, answer the phone with a smile. since, if you are carried away by your anger, frustrations, problems, and any bad feelings from home or anywhere, when you are in the office try very hard to answer the phone with a smile because if you don't i don't know what your attitude or sound could be when you answer people at the other end of the line. you may sound harsh, unpolite, angry, unprofessional and i don't know what else... just try to observe. isn't it right?

I completely agree with what you office mates told you. Smiles are contagious even when they are over the phone. 9 times out of 10 I am sure that you will get a positive response from some one on the other line if you simply smile while talking to them. You can actually hear a fluctuation in one's voice when they are smiling.

you're right. smile is contagious. what could have been this world be without smile. i even know of a province that is called "The City of Smile". maybe people there really have a ready, beautiful smile for people around them.

yes thats a good thing. I have worked as a telemarketer for 2 years. and we were always taught to recieve or answer a call with smile. What it does is it boosts up your morale and send a positive msg to ur brain. Makes ur job easier ;)

Your right , you answer the phone with smile evn do your not in the mood, it will be home or work so the caller will be welcome, if you give an answer with wierd voice directly they will ask you what happen its there something wrong, they will worried specially if family member called, be a professional even do your not in the mood that what i learn from my work. dont carry all the time world.

yes, one can really detect if the person at the other end is in bad mood when he/she answers the phone. so it's better to smile when answering the phone and temporarily forget your anger when answering. smile and world smiles with you!

i think we should always try because we never know who's calling unless you have a caller ID machine wherein the number that is calling is being flashed.

I certainly did that when I was at work and taught the newbies to do the same. However, when I am at home, if I answer at all it is usually with a growl, because of all the junk calls that still try to sneak past my rather elaborate screening system. I only pick up the phone without checking when it is too dark to read the display on my phone and I don't feel like turning the lamp on. My computer desks lamp is really cute, but it is a soft light appropriate for working at the computer. My friends know I would rather IM than chat on the phone.

sometimes i'm like you too - answering with a growl because there are like what you've said 'junk callers'. but it's good you have a caller ID. at least you know who's calling.

Since one year I am using this rule and it had really helped me. Now I am control of my mood. Not only before speaking on phone, I have implemented this even talking to my junior staffs.

I do try to answer the phone with a smile. Since we run our business out of our home I tend to have to remember that when the phone rings whatever else is going on in the house has to stop. That is hard to do sometimes, but I never do know when it's going to be a customer or potential customer on the other end. It does help to turn that smile on.

i agree though it's hard to do sometimes. but since you have a business where you have to deal with customers it's just proper to do so or else you will lose them.
