There's one thing I'm really, really, really trying to be selfless about right now. I mad reservations to go to my mother's hometown the day after Christmas with my fiance, but after I bought the ticket, his work said he couldn't have the days off. So, I asked my friend if she would go with me so the ticket wouldn't be wasted and she said yes. Now she's saying she may not be able to go, either due to work and financial reasons. I absolutely do not want to fly alone. I've never done it before and the idea terrifies me, so I'm trying really hard not to beg her to come because I know she really may not be able to.

I always think that's such an interesting word ... selfless ... mainly because it's a meaningless word that doesn't exist. Every single action we perform is selfish, without exception. The problem being that people automatically think that selfish has to mean a bad thing, and that's not true. *shrug* You helped out a friend, and that's great ... but you did it because it made you feel good to do it. That's the selfish motive involved. There's no such thing as 'selfless'. Human beings are selfish by nature. We do things that make us feel good to do. We do charity work because we enjoy the feeling we get from helping other people. If we got nothing in return, we wouldn't do it. If doing volunteer work made us feel badly, would we still do it? Of course not. We do these 'selfless' acts because of the self gratification involved. And there's nothing wrong with that. Selfish isn't always a bad thing.
