Would you work in a job you enjoy for less money?

I have recently gone from earning around $20AU an hour right down to $14 an hour. In my previous job, i was working a lot of night shift. Now I've just become a vet nurse and to be honest the wage difference came as a total shock. I was always aware that vet nursing doesn't pay much but I seriously think I could get more working at McDonalds. However I'm not complaining as I am working heaps of hours, so I'm making enough to pay the bills and I really like my job. I just hope that once I'm a qualified vet nurse my pay will go up. Have any of you quit a high paying job for a more pleasant, lower paying job?

I've never done it but I can understand the reasons behind doing it. I'd rather work for lower pay at a job I love than to get paid more but hate going to work everyday. You have to look at the overall quality of your life.

it was difficult but i always knew and had a feeling deep inside that i had done what should be done. i quit a high paying and tenured research associateship in a research institution for a relatively low paying teaching job. so far, i have not regretted anything. my previous job would not let me have enough time for recreation, while teaching has breaks every term.

Absolutely I would and I have in the past. I actually went from a nursing assistant job that paid $13.50/hr. to a job working with autistic children that only paid $10/hr. I figured everyone spends so much time working to pay the bill so they might as well spend all those hours doing something they really enjoy if it's possible.

Yes! in 2000 I was a member/provider service rep for a major insurance company. It was horribly stessful. But paid well. I worked there for a year.Couldn't take anymore! Went to work at a call center making much less. Money isn't always the answer. And definetly not always worth it.

I haven't quit a higher paying job for a lower paying one, but I would in a heart beat if it was something I enjoyed doing. So, often it is a struggle to go to work and it is something that is miserable. It would be much better to get paid less (as long as the bills were getting paid) and to enjoy going to work.

That hasnt happened to me.However, I think i would work in a job I would enjoy much even if payment was lower.I cant be sure though- no-one can. When i create a family and expenses are many, i would probably regret doing this.Sometimes you gotta care for the people round you and not only for yourself.Great combination would be enjoyable job-high salary :)

I was working for around Rs 50,000 per month in the software industry and I quit my job and later worked as a teacher starting at Rs 5,000. I enjoy doing what I do (not that I didn't like my earlier job). And fortunately, I don't have to work for the money. Earlier, I didn't have a family and was working for myself and could have all sorts of hours but now as a teacher, I get the time to spend with my family and I don't want to compromise on that. And I get to spend time with other kids (which is something I always enjoyed).

Yes it wouldn't bother me a bit to take less money to have a job I liked. I did leave Walmart after making $11+ an hour to making $6 an hour. I really didn't like the job any better but the company was better. Though I knew it was a temp job too LOL.

If I really enjoyed my job I would take less money. Right now I do like my job so I would not trade right now.

I also agree that Money is not everything in life. There are lots of things that are more precious in our life than money. Time to spend with our family, job satisfaction, working atmosphere, our happiness, respect, love, friendship, etc counts more than money. I think we need money to pay our bills and to live happily. I do not think one be happy by taking big amount of money for the job he does not like. I think you should stick on the job, which you likes and try to get promotion in it.

Your right money is not everything. I would trade less money for more time with my family any day. I know I need to work but I really enjoy spending time with my kids.

I have not quit my job, because i have to finish my study first. I wouldn;t mind earning less if i could do the job i love. If i finish my study i know i'm gonna love my job.But i never want to have a job i don't like even if it brings me a million dollars.

Yes, I have and I wish I could do so right now. I'm unhappy in my current position, as the company's policies are no longer geared to have an enjoyable working enviroment. Instead the company has created a stressful enviroment, that has some people looking over their shoulder, fearing they could be fired or let go. And the company either replaces them with lower paid personnel that have little to no experience or has no plans to replace them, which creates more stress on the remaining employees. It is a shame, because I used to enjoy going to work and the employees did a very good job. Unfortunately for me, my current wage isn't likely to be matched by any of the local companies, so I remain there. I don't hate my job, but it makes me sad that the company I've worked for, for over 12 years, is no longer enjoyable and that feeling permeates throughout the company.

Hi,there! I haven't had such experience before but I think I would work in a job that I enjoy even if I get less payment.Of course,it should be a job that I can live on my own.If it is under the condition that I can support myself, then I don't have problems with it.Because the job is sth that I really like and I really wanna do.Even if I don't get much money,I'm still happy about it:) But I think the best case would be that I find a job which pays well too.LOL!I'll try my best to achieve that! Good luck for you and best regards^_^
