penguin - penguin a bird who flys on water
Hi rainbow2007star, The Penguin is not an animal; it is a bird - which is found around the South Pole, i.e. Antarctica. Since penguins are generally near water, they do not have wings but flippers, thus they cannot fly. They are a delight to watch as they waddle to the seafront. The penguins' bodies are built to withstand extreme conditions. A thick layer of fat and a heavy feather cover keep them warm in the sub-normal temperatures of Antarctica. Penguins always walk around in groups. A group of penguins is called a rookery, and one rookery could contain as many as a million penguins! Now you know which animal is least likely to be lonely! There are nearly 10 species of penguins, and this differentiation is based on their sizes. Most penguins are black and white in colour. Penguins are birds so having wings in no surprise. However, even though penguins have lost their ability to fly in air, their wings are now adapted to "fly" in water. The ocean is where their food is found.Their bodies have evolved to move easily through water and their wings are used as rudders and propellers. Being adapted to water and insulated from cold environments, their bodies are now too heavy to fly in air. They are the only bird to survive in extreme cold for long periods of time.

There are a number of species of seabirds which can not only fly in the air, but can also "fly" underwater. They dive into the sea, and swim down to quite deep depths after fish.

Actually some birds can't fly as well as pinguins, such as chicken, duck, goose etc. But they are still birds.

I have seen penguins in Australia on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. I went out to a talk about them. I heard strange noises as I walked to the village hall. It was fascinating to find out about them. Later we went to see them. They were coming out of the sea having been fishing before hand. Wow! These were fairy penguins or blue penguins. They are very sweet looking and quite small. They are birds but as you say they don't fly. I went to the South Island of New Zealand and saw yellow eyed penguins. They are nervous of people so I viewed them from a platform above a cove. They have yellow markings around their eyes. The penguins that live in the South Pole are the large ones. Wow! I would love to go there and see them.

Well genetically speaking they are birds but the thing is, their body is much bigger than their wings and thus it cannot fly according to the laws of aviation. So, to make use of their wings, they use it as flippers underwater.
