jwfarrimond responded to a discussion called Happy Holidays vs Merry Christmas in life.

Well, as you say,it was a time of celebration long before the Christians came along. I don't really care what anyone calls it, or how that they celebrate it - it's just the same celebration of the equinox and the slow return to warmth and light. So a happy "holy"day to you as well! [em]happy[/em]

I've not got mixed feelings about it - I think that its a complete waste of money that could be better spent elsewhere. The whole business reminds me of the tactic employed by the Roman Emperors. If the populace seemed likely to riot, put on some games in the circus to take their mind off their problems. Same old thing.... I know one thing, London will be the place to avoid like the plague t...

There's a lot to be said for simplicity! [em]lol[/em] Sometimes I think that some things are made more complicated than they need to - not that I have any difficulty with technology! [em]whistle[/em]

jwfarrimond responded to a discussion called is traveling by plane safer than by train or bus? in traveling.
Depends on where you are. The safety of any mode of transport depends on the standards of maintenence and of general safety standards. For example, in the Far East there have been several incidents of ferry accidents due to poor safety standards resulting in overloading and capsize of the boats. Air travel in most of the Western world is pretty safe due to the rigorous standards of maintena...

Five seconds would be nearer to the mark! [em]lol[/em] I remember those Quaker Oats packets with the recipes on the back. [em]happy[/em] I get the cheapo Tesco or ASDA own brand though now that I have to watch every penny.

Not a problem and the pass and my debit card are in different wallets [em]happy[/em] Now trying to use my railcard on the bus, thats a different matter...[em]confused[/em] Though I can actually use my bus pass on the railway as well as long as the journey is within Greater Manchester. If I'm travelling back home on the train, I only need to book a ticket as far as the GM boundary as I can tr...

VAT is an EC tax that was imposed after we made the mistake of joining. It replaced the previous purchace tax which was levied at a much lower rate. That in itself caused a big instant rise in the cost of living. Now we are paying VAT at 17% on practically everything, (not energy though) and I remember when that rate of VAT was only levied on "luxury" items. Apparently, almost everything is now...

I think that a lot of the work created is short term which will only last as long as the event itself. That is no use at all.

Janey, don't you know, that is what professional sport is and always has been about - money. YOUR money going into THEIR pockets! And what do you get in return? Well, nothing really.
