I just read an article - http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,318393,00.html - that stated that the number of poor people in American with worms (roundworm, tape worm, etc) is under reported. I can't imagine having a child with any symptom or visible mark from a worm or other disease and not taking them to a doctor. Many of those worms have very harmful effects like seizures and birth defects.

A lot of worms are not particularly visible. Nevertheless, it is sensible for parents to be vigilant & seek treatment at the first sign of worms. Treatment is not that expensive, & probably reduced for those on low incomes. Mostly children with worms have itching at night. Parents can check this & they will see the worm coming out! I know of families here whose kids have worms and they are just left untreated, then send their kids to stay at other peoples homes.

I know when kids are really small they can get pin worms and those can only be seen in the dark because the glow. I think those are only contagious if the kids srratches their butt then doesn't wash their hands. The other worms that are mentioned in the article - for the most part - are fairly noticeable and are cheap to treat.
