"she told me that the are all the same they are all terrorist" I have to be honest here and say that, that sort of mindset and attitude REPULSES ME! I truly cannot stand ppl who generalize like that whether its over a religious group or a race or ppl in a certain line of work etc etc....It just infuriates me to no end!!! That being said....I would, have and do tell my children the basics of the religion just like I do with any religion...I also let them know that just like with ANYTHING in life you have ppl who are true and kind in their beliefs (they have it right) and then there are those who are corrupt, mindtwisted and in serious need of frontal lobotamies....You get it in ALL religions...There are "good" Christians and "bad" there are "good" Pagans and "bad" there are "good" Jewish and "bad" and so on....MIND YOU my kids are older (14 and 12 1/2) so they "get it" ya know..Explaining things to them at this age is much easier than when, for example, 9/11 happened

If we perpetuate this hate down through our children, then our western children and muslim children will kill themselves while we lay on our deathbed. The cycle needs to stop, and the only way to do that is through understanding. The first step to understanding each other is acceptance. It breaks my heart when I hear of parents teach thier children how to hate. When will the world wake up and realise we are just putting more fuel on the fire? .... probably not untill it is too late.

I will introduce my child to a good Muslim friend of mine, who is a wonderful person, for one thing! The other thing I will tell my son is that every religion has it's share of both good people and bad, and that the bad ones are usually the ones who get more attention. It's the same in my own religion... the Pagans that we see in the news are the ones who are in rebellion against everything, not those of us who quietly revere the earth and follow our Gods. I will point out the doctrines in Islam which are negative, and those which are positive, and explain to him how sometimes cultural issues get mixed into religion, and how to separate what was intended by the founders of the religion from what is now spread by adherents. I could apply this same method to any religion, honestly. I plan to give him pretty much the same breakdown on every religion I know of, pointing out the parts where doctrines have been corrupted by people's personal opinions, or the traditions of the cultures in which they grew, or even just the people currently claiming those beliefs. I will teach him to go to the source and investigate as often as possible, rather than believing what others tell him.

rkbehera: When using statistics like that, you can still get things wrong where it matters. It might be the case that more Muslims have been involved in acts of terrorism than any other religious group, but that would also count acts that were done for reasons other than religion (often politics), and still leave out the peace-loving Muslims, and those who are working to reform modern Islam. Personally I find I'd rather take risks with trusting people than live with so much hate and bigotry.... if one of my Muslim friends stabs me in the back someday (or my Christian friends or anyone of a religion other than my own) then I will know I at least have lived with honor and tolerance.

Harley009: I'm glad you liked my response! :) I know this one firsthand... I've had more people try to tell me horribly wrong things about my own religious beliefs than I can count. So I'm not willing to listen to just anyone when it comes to religion: I'd rather do the research myself and find where certain beliefs and practices really come from. I think one of the biggest obstacles to peace between people of different religions is that most people aren't willing to do that research: they go to clergy of their own religion for information about other beliefs, or just accept whatever is popular opinion. My Muslim friends say essentially the same thing you just did: that they don't practice certain things that are considered part of Islam but are really mostly tradition and culture. The first Muslim I knew well, a friend of mine from high school, was very proud of his parents for teaching him what he called "true Islam" and not passing on the more harmful traditions. We were very close because there weren't many non-Christians of any type in our school, and so me (the Celtic Pagan), the Muslim, the Hindu, the Buddhist, the Atheist, and the Jew all hung out together. :P

Thanks lecanis! It would be a nice decision! One should understand a particular belief system in it's own belief context rather than from the rumors spreading among other religious followers. I always tried to get rid of any act in name of my religion that some people used to practice, but actually many of them were just traditionally followed things and beliefs rather than from actual Islamic beliefs. Thanks again. -Cheers!

Oh do not tell them, "Not all Muslims are terrorists, most of them are good people." because that is giving the terrorist Muslims an excuse. Tell them that Muslims believe in Allah, read the Koran, and bow to Mecca 5 (or is it 7) times a day. Tell them how Mohammed started the religion and how they spread it. If you do that, it is basic and your youngsters will get the idea. Do not sugarcoat it, nor make out that all are good people. Women in most Muslim countries are not given as much freedom, and in some countries, privileges are given to those who practice the Islam religion but not to those who do not. Tell them that this giving of privileges has given some Muslims the idea that all non-Muslims should be convert or killed and that the moderate Muslims might want to stop this, but may be prevented from doing so.

I would have no problem sitting next to an arab or any other ethnicity. One should not be afraid of someone, or dislike them based on their ethnicity. That is just not fair or right. As for what we should tell our children about the muslim religion, well tell them as much of the basic facts that you accurately know, just as you would any other religion

Aww!, I'm a Muslim and from India. Such kind of behavior is so bad I think, what do you think we need a list of nation when we book flight ticket whether we can sit with or not? If one got a bad smell or any bad disease or act there is some meaning in saying like that, otherwise she seriously hate Muslims or brainwashed to believe Muslims are terrorists. Islam means peace, in submitting to one and only one God. Believe in One God, worship & pray only to him, and do good deeds, believe in his prophets, holy hooks, angels, in the day of judgment, in the power of God, and right and wrong are from God. Testify that there is no got but Allah, and Prophet Mohammad is Allah's messenger. Offer 5 time daily prayers, pay 2.5% of annual earnings as charity(zakat), fast in the holy month of ramadan, and do pilgrimage to mecca if economically and healthily feasible. God created mankind and gave direction to mankind through assigned prophets(they themselves human), and we have to follow his direction to live good here and here after. If we follow is directions and do good deeds, here after we can attain an never ending paradise as reward. That is Islamic concept.

revenladyj, Thanks! thanks for understanding and kind words. Many people are still mis-understanding Islam, some people are blind in opposing the total Islam and they should be called as "Anti-Islamic Extremists", They just like hang on the extremists who namely known as Muslims and they are less than 0.01% of total Muslim population. We Muslims are just like everyone else we have life, happiness and sorrow. But we keep our moral values in our life not only in Mosque. It is the Islam for everyone not only meant to me, who ever understand the Holy book Quran with intension of understanding it, of course he can get the right Islam. However some born Muslims don't know what is really inside Quran, it is pity and proper education is the best solution for it.

I don't have any idea what telling our children about muslims has anything to do with terrorism in the world. Being a muslim does not make a person a terrorist. Being a sick and disgusting person makes a person a terorist. I would tell my children all I know about being a muslim if they asked, which is pretty much nothing. I would, however, take them to the library to find books that we could all learn from together. I would disregard any books that equate any religion to terrorism. After reading the books I would find out if there are any worship centers around here that perhaps we could meet some muslim people. I think it is sad how we, especially in America, are so judgemental before we really even know the facts. Now, what if I said the same thing about Christians? "I don't want to sit next to a Christian because they are allt eh same. They are selfish, rude, and think that only they know the truth". That would really get some hackles up, but it is acceptable to say it about other cultures in this country. It really makes me sad.

blueunicorn, You said it well, thank you for understanding and speaking out here. Some are so judgmental even without knowing the truth, and they say they know well. They got some weak Ideas from some books or rumors. Thanks

If those of us who don't judge would be more strong and speak out a little louder we may be able to drown out those that want to spread the hate. I don't know... I just can't stand all the fear about something we really don't understand. At least I don't fully understand the religion of Islam, but I would be happy to learn before making any judgement calls. In my personal opinion the fundamental Christians are just as scary as Muslims. The Christians have proven themselves to be more hateful than any group of people I know so far. This is just personal experience, though. Not all Christians are this way, just as not all Muslims are terrorists.

Some people think Muslims are all bad because of what is seen on the news.
