How can I spend less money on food?

Everytime I go to the supermarket, I have a shopping list with all the things we need. Yet I always end up by buying the whole shop. Even when the list contains only a few items, I end up with a full trolley. I was talking to my neighbour about that and the same thing happens to her. Is it because we are women and we like shopping? Can't we do anything about it?

Before going out to shop, look at the flyers and such and make a list of what you NEED. Next, make a subtotal of all the items you will be buying and on your trip to the store, ONLY BRING that much money so that you KNOW you can only get what you need. Itll keep you from getting the useless items that fill up the trolley.

Thanks. The problem is that I usually pay with my credit card. But I can see your point. I used to spend a lot less when I paid cash. With the card, you don't physically feel you're giving money away, that's half of the problem, I think.

Have you heard about freegans? I think that is the correct name. If you haven't, did you know that grocery stones throw away a lot of food? Freegans are what you call people who know when grocery stones are about to throw away their food to replace with new ones. They show up, take enough food for about two weeks and do the same thing again when needed or when they want. This is all for free. The food is still good to eat, but if something doesn't look right, just don't take it. I learned about them watching Discovery Channel and thought it was interesting. Something I may even try once. This is not something you have to do but I thought I would share this information.

the only way i know of saving money whilst shopping is to buy large containers of things that dont perish but you use. I buy tea and coffee in giant packs and it works out a lot less expensive that way happy shopping blessed be

I stick just to my list and do not buy anything else just what we need and not what we want. I also save a good bit of money buy cliping coupons and bringing them to the staore with me (list & coupons) this seems to help me alot.

Try limiting your self to items that are on sale, or you could buy the less known brands. Cupons are also good. My sister is a cupon fiend, I once went to the store with her she racked up a 225$ bill maybe more and by the time they got done with her cupons she owed about 22.99. She must have had about 100 cupons which I think is a little extreme but it works.

What I do before I make my shopping list is make a menu for the week. I don't plan specific days, because I often decide last minute what to make, but I just plan enough meals for the week. Then I go through my kitchen and see what I already have and what I need for those meals. Then I know exactly what I will be needing for the coming week and I rarely get things that are not on the list. Without a menu, you may feel like you are not getting enough or that you need more than what you thought when you made the list. But with the menu, there are no excuses for not knowing what you need. Checking your inventory is also important, since you may not remember what you already have. The other thing I try to do is make the list in order of how the store is laid out. The store where I shop is laid out with deli, produce and bakery first, then I go to dry goods, then meats, then non food- like paper towels, then frozen and dairy. Having the list in order means that I only go through the store once, because I see what I need as I come to that section. Having to backtrack means I sometimes pick up extras along the way. Make it quick as possible.

it is the case with me. I make a list, go to shopping mall and everytime end up buying so much extra thing. I tend to buy things that catch my attention and also if there is some free gift. I do understand after buying taht i have not made any profit, but lost so much money.

Same old story! I know ladies like shopping a lot. They go shopping with cash in their purses and come back home with empty purses containing empty credit, debit cards and the shopped up items loaded on a free service provider (husband/boyfriends) whose pockets too get emptied at the shopping malls! I think you can help yourselves from over shopping/over soending by assigning the shopping work to your husband or any other male in your haouse. The results will show!!

i think it's ok because you are paying in cash. i think it becomes not ok with you start having debts and being delinquent on paying. i think it is good that you have a list. follow first what's on the list then go ahead with what you want. so long as you can consume what you buy.
