I LOATHE Sauerkraut...just the smell of it makes me want to gag...not a fun way to ring in the new year... everyone here makes it everywhere! Any other traditional foods? I have seen New Years Pretzles for good luck, my aunt claims you have to eat pickeled herring (that is far worse than the sauerkraut!)

We always have sauerkraut with pork and keilbasa on New Years eve.We had it last night with friends and maybe a little tomorrow then that's it. Other than that I never eat keilbasa and sauerkraut maybe once or twice during the year.

Oh I hate Sauerkraut with a passion. It stinks and also makes me want to gag with the smell and look of it. My mom used to make it but she didn't this year. Instead she made Pasta for me since I was there and she made homemade beans for herself. I hate beans too and the only ones I will eat are Green beans. My husband likes Sauerkraut too and he also likes beans. Ick! Just thinking about them makes me want to puke, lol. I heard that it is supposed to bring you good luck if you eat them on New Years Eve but I don't care, I will not eat them no matter good luck or bad luck. Besides, I don't believe that eating something on a certain day will bring you any kind of luck. I believe you make your own destiny and luck with your actions. :) I have never heard the one about New Years pretzels but I don't like pretzels that much either. I usually just eat the salt off of them but I'm trying to reduce my salt intake, and believe me it's not easy because I love salt. Pickled Herring? Oh so gross. I would never eat that either. :)

glad someone is also grossed out by it!! the new year's pretzle is actually more like pastry, like a cinamon roll sort of, except its shaped like a pretzle... thanks for the response - happy new year!!

I have heard much talk about Sauerkruat lately. Up until a couple of days ago, I did not even know what it was. It is not a New Year tradition in my family, nor in the family of anyone I know. Pickled cabbage sounds kind of interesting though.

OK. We are going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Even since my first high school job working at a Smorgasbord, I have loved pickled herring, especially the creamy kind with lots of onions. I consider pretzels good luck any day of the week, and I adore Sauerkraut, but I make the Japanese style fermented cabbage myself and buy the German kind. For a westerner, I've made some pretty good Kimchee, too, but still don't get it perfect every time.

My family doesn't make anything special for new years really. But as for your sauerkraut comment. I don't really care for it myself either until I tried it on pepperoni pizza. You have them put it on there before the cook it so its not all slimmy when you eat it. It taste really good that way it gives the pizza a twangy flavor to it.
