Nightmares - "Stuff that goes 'bump!' in the night!" ;)

Ok I'm more of a skeptical person myself, I've heard contless stories and recollections from friends and relatives, some serious, some of a humorous nature, regarding the ghosts, apparitions, and everything else you could label as being paranormal. But yesterday, for a short time I was as scared as an 8 year old. Moving on,Yesterday night I went to bet at around 10:00 PM, wich for me is a bit early, considering I usually go to sleep around midnight. Anyway, I fell asleep without problems, but what happened next shook me up so badly I'm still afraid to fall asleep now.;) Sometime during the night, I started having this dream, well, I really can't call it that, It was very short... but anyway, I didn't see anything, it was pitch black, only a voice mumbling something i couldn't understand. Soon after that in the black backgrownd i could see some letters and numbers, but nothing intelligible. Realising that I am dreaming, i tried to wake up, but with no success. Eventually the dream stopped, then I thought I could finally get up... but that wasn't the case. I was lying there, fully conscious, knowing where I am, but unable to lift a finger. This lasted about 10 seconds, which where probably the most horrifing 10 seconds of my life. Finally when I could move, i tried to lift my head, only to feel like something was crawling from my face to the back of my skull... It felt like a hand tip-toe-ing with all 5 fingers. (I know this sounds stupid, but later I thought about Thing, from the Adams Family.:) ) Anyway, I jumped up screaming and ran into my parents bedroom. After checking and rechecking my room, obviously I not finding anything, I gave up and went to the bathroom. When I looked in the mirror i could see sleep marks on the right side of my face... Somehow in my sleep I managed to turn around and slept with may face in the pillow, so circulation was slowed down in that region, causing me to feel the tingling sensation I interpreted as a hand. This, combined with some minor sleep paralysis, which I've never experienced before, turned out to be one "scary as hell" experience.:) Now, it's almost 1:30 AM and I'm scared of falling asleep. I know there's a logical explanation to what happened before, I know there are no such things as ghosts, the boogeyman, etc. But I still can't go to sleep. I've been through a lot of stuff, car crashes, floods, fights, and lot's of stuff people would say are terrifing or scary. But I have NEVER been so scared in my entire life, like I was then. I can't remember when I last screamed, except for yesterday. I've been keeping myself occupied the last few hours, reading about dreams, sleep paralysis, hypnagogia, and found many explanations and logical arguments to what happened. But somehow, I still can't settle and go to sleep. Anybody else have similar experiences? I'm hoping to find some comfort by talking about it... I don't want to talk with my parents about it, and I certainly can't say anything to my friends.:)) People tend to laugh about stuff like this. I did too, but believe me it's not that funny when it's happening to you.;)

Poor you - a very frightening experience. No help from me on what happened, I'm afraid, but I do know that when I get emotional like that, the hair stands up on my arms and my head really tingles as the hairs on my head try to stand up as well. That does feel as though something is creeping over me! I have seen a few ghosts but they have always given off a good feeling, not nasty, so at the time my hairs have stood up but I've not been frightened or fearful. However, I've had some very frightening experiences that turned out to be nothing at all in the end. Like when your arm goes to sleep when you lie on it and you wake up to a 'strange' arm touching you. haha So it turns out that when you have no need to be frightened you are, and when you may think you should be frightened, you aren't! haha

I had a similar experience - terrified the hell out of me. I woke up at a round 3am, at least my mind did I was wide awake but could not move an inch of my body. I felt a presence as though someone or something was behind as I lay unable to move on my side. I fought to get up so hard the next thing I knew I appeared in my hallway somewhere between the ceiling and the space of the room but I had no sense of my body which I could now see slumped on the hallway floor. Alarmed that I was not in by body I some how jumped back into myself. But by this time I'm really exhausted and I have to drag myself across the floor to get back into bed. This was the worse experience of terror I have ever known. This happened to me about 20 years ago and I have never forgotton it. I saw the film Ghost several years ago - Sam's spirit self is weak when he leaves the mediums body. But in my case I felt weak when I jumped back into mine. I know it took all my strength to jump out of my body and I know this left me exhausted. I cannot explain how I physically got into the hallway. I have since heard of sleep paralysis which I accept as what I experienced. But I believe my OBE was real.

Wow! Outer body experiences are very wierd, and disturbing! Nevertheless, u should check out sleep paralysis hipnosis, which may be the cause of what happened. But even that dosen't explain everything, seeing how you managed to get on the floor, out of your bed... Anyway, freaky stuff! :)

Nightmare can be real at some point. It may be stress related, so you are trying to escape from the dark site of your life. Scary dreams may show way to move into light...and finally be free for stress.... Awake stage may be part of the dream, when you think that you are awake.

Are you really so sure it was sleep paralysis, and impair circulation? Or does the subliminal part of your brain still intone that it might have been an apparition. No it isn't funny when it is happening to you. But I do believe is ghosts or spirits at least so I am not convinced that it was sleep paralysis and circulation. I have never heard of a spirit that actually wanted to hurt anyone though so don't worry. Say a little pray (If you believe in God) and that will probably give you more comfort and protections so you can sleep. Have a wonderfull year in 2008 and all the best to you.

Yeah i'm pretty much sure it that's what happened. :) Believe me at the moment I was convinced it was a hand, after a couple of minutes i got myself toghether and started searching for a bug with big feet :)), after that I finally saw the sleep marks on my face and then it hit me :P. About the hallucinations however, i'm not very sure. To be honest, I haven't had a dream in a couple of months. At least I can't remember any. So this wierd dream + the voice + the paralysis, it's all a very very wierd coincidence. It's possible that there was a paranormal phenomenon involved, if there is such a thing... But nothing like you see in movies, mind you, no furniture moving, no ghosts or poltergeists. :) I did pray before I went to sleep ( i'm not much of a church frequenter, but praying before sleep is something my parents thought me since I was very little, so i do it, and automatically fall asleep everytime. ;) ) Happy new year to you too!

Nightmares can be very scary but what your discribing sure sounds like you might have had a visit with the spirits, you said you were fully conscious but unable to move I too have had a similiar thing happen but I could see something that was sitting on my bed and I could not move it was a wierd feeling but I wasn't scared because it felt as if I knew who was sitting there, but when I finally got up no one was around, dreams I guess can seem very real I know I felt funny all the next day and couldn't get it off of my mind.I haven't ever laughed about stuff like that since I am with you its not that funny when it is happening to you.

Yes, everything you experienced can, as you correctly surmised, be expained easily with mundane explanations. That "sleep paralysis" is actually not uncommon, and is pretty freaky to anyone experiencing it, even if it isn't the first time. (For anyone who doesn't know, sleep paralysis is, to put it simply, when your consciousness wakes up before your subconscious (which controls your muscles, etc.) does. As a consequence, for a short period of time, you are fully self-aware, but unable to move at all.) That doesn't mean that it can't be traumatic or isn't. I, for example, like many people, am afraid of bugs, even bugs that I know are no actual threat to me (a random cockroach, for example). I know it's irrational, and there's no good reason to be afraid, but I am anyway--knowing that something shouldn't "freak you out" definitely does NOT mean that it isn't still fully capable of doing so. Sometimes, if traumas are bad enough, they can be lifelong. I've read cases of someone seeing a butterfly float past just as they experienced a severe emotional trauma, and that person developed a phobia of butterflies. The human mind's inner workings are fascinating that way.

Wow, the butterfly story beats mine. :)) Still, it had to be something pretty big to get the person in that state. And of all things, butterflies. Such ferocious beasts indeed. :)) Yeah a lot of people have phobias, i actually don't. At least nothing related to material stuff. :) My biggest fear, which I've just discovered, is loosing control. I can't stand not being in control of stuff. Not to mention myself. During those 10 seconds when I couldn't move, I was scared, but at the same time angry, pissed off, at whatever was preventing me to get up.
