My boyfriend and I have been dating for over a year and half. We don't live together, but I do spend a lot of time at his home. We talk about the future and know that one day we will get married. I really want a puppy, and we are both toying with getting one. Do you think it's a good idea to get one at our stage in our relationship?

I think you should wait until you've lived together for about a year and have proved that your co-habiting is successful. I don't want to sound pessimistic, but you never know what the future holds and a puppy needs a permanent and stable home to live in.

They could always decide beforehand if they split up who gets the dog. Many times, even in marraige, it's written down on paper that the man for instance gets the yellow dog and the fish and the woman gets the brown dog and the two cats.

I dont think you should get a puppy until you are at least living together. What is the rush?Who would the puppy live with you or your boyfriend? Why nt wait until the relationship is a bit more stable before bringing anything else into it.

I don't see anything wrong with getting a puppy. Maybe you should make some kind of agreement about the puppy in writing, depending on who will be taking responsibility for the shots, dog food, and other expenses that come along with having a dog. Either way, a puppy/dog is a good thing and may bring happiness to both of you, if that's what you want there is nothing wrong with getting one.

My boyfriend and I got a puppy, 2 years ago, but we were living together. I think in your case, you should just make sure that he really wants most of the responsibility of taking care of it, since it will be staying at his house. Sometimes getting a puppy sounds like a great idea, but once you get it, there is house-breaking to do, which takes time, there is feeding, and caring for it.

I AM going through the SAME exact thing!! haha except my boyfriend wants to wait until next year to get one!! =( How'd you convince your boyfriend to even let you get one?! But to answer your question -- yes, i think it's fine if you both want a dog to get one :) Hope this helped you!

I didn't convince him yet, I am trying too. We might just wait until the SPring because that's usually a better time. I really want a white/yellow lab though, they are so cute!
