I'm thinking of becoming a foster mom

I've been thinking of adopting a kitten, but I have a 14 year old male cat who may get jealous if I do. I've spoken to a woman at an animal shelter about this, and she suggested I foster kittens. I thought that was a great idea. It will allow me to test the waters and see how my cat will react to a new addition to the family, and if all goes well, I can adopt a kitten of my choice. As the lady I spoke with said, I will also be saving a life because these kittens come from kill-shelters they've been rescued from. It works out well for everyone involved. The shelter will supply me with everything I need - food, cages, etc. I was told the kittens I will foster will most likely be 2 weeks old and I will have to bottle feed them and raise them until they are ready to be adopted (about 2 months), at which point the shelter will take them back and hold them until they are adopted. I'm anxious to get on with this. Has anyone here ever fostered a kitten/kittens? What did you think of the experience?

I was going to do that very thing, but reconsidered when I realized that I'd become too attached to a given kitten or cat, and would not want to give them up. I couldn't work in a shelter either, as my heart would go out to all of the animals and I'd wind up bringing at least some of them home. Guess that I'm the wrong type. I have adopted two cats from the shelter over a year ago, Columbus and Waffles. And my third cat, Mimi, was given up by my sister's friend.

I think that would be a wonderful experience, but I have never done it. It would be a lot of work until the kittens can eat cat food, but fun. I have been thinking of having foster cats myself for a long time, but I have 1 cat and 3 little kids. So maybe when my kids are a bit older. Good luck!

I haven't ever foster kittens but I want to. I don't have the space right now as I live in a one bedroom apartment, but hopefully when my husband gets out of school and we are able to afford a house--I can be a foster kitty mom. The really cool thing about fostering kittens is that you are completely saving their lives. Kittens that are too young to be fixed when they come to the shelter are euthanasized unless they are able to be fostered--or at least that is the case here. I hope you do this, I think it is a noble endeavor. Keep us updated on how it goes if you decide to do it.
