This coming summer I will be moving and have alot of big furniture and tons of stuff to move. Right now I'm trying to downsize and get rid of things I don't want or don't use. Any tips on packing and getting ready to move? What would you start packing first? What would you start packing last? Should I just get a roomfull of stuff I dont want and have friends and family come and get what they want? I don't have the time or patience to have a moving sale.

I would start packing knick knacks first. You don't have to have those out and they need to be wrapped in newspaper and it will take a while to do. I would pack clothes and food and dishes last. I would take everything with me that I have worked hard for and so should you. Get rid of things you don't need. you may be able to call a thrift store and have them pick up your unwanted items.

Know what? that sounds like some good advice! Guess I should go buy a newspaper and get started. I have at least 4 months but I think time will go fast and something that I don't want to be doing is packing all at once at the last minute and being really disorgainized! Thanks!

Your welcome. You can even get some boxes from the grocery staore or any place that gets inventory where they throw out boxes once they stock shelves,

I just moved this week. Like you I downsized so I had A LOT of "stuff" to get rid of. I would start by going through your house and deciding which things you are getting rid of. Take those things to Goodwill or list them on FreeCycle. You can find a FreeCycle in your area at www.freecycle.org. Once the things you know you want to get rid of are out of the way it makes the packing look a lot easier. Next, start packing the things you know you won't need for awhile. What I did was get a box as soon as I knew I was moving. Every time I touched something in my house I would think, "Can I live without this until we move and it gets unpacked?". If the answer was yes, it went in a box. NEVER pack important papers such as birth certificate, insurance paperwork, etc. Those should go in a folder that you keep with you as you are moving and in a safe place between now and then. I hope some of this helps!

I've moved alot of times, and have always tried to get ahead on the packing but always end up jamming everything into boxes and maybe not seeing it for a really long time. I want to have it so all I have to do is look at a box and know what's in it. lol.....maybe I'm dreaming again! I think I have alot of time, probably like always, I'll keep putting it off and I'll be scrambling at the last minute. Maybe if I do it little by little and use some of the advice I got here, it will go a little smoother.

I hear you. I HATE packing! Since my moves have always just been across town I wind up packing in the most disorganized way. I just put whatever I come across into whatever box is available. I've always been unpacked within 4 days of moving, anyway, so I never worry about it. Most people would cringe!
