Do you know if there are any volunteer opportunities in your community?

Do you volunteer? - volunteer opportunities

I actually belong to what is called a Time Bank right here in my city where we trade off whatever we can do such as baby sitting, giving rides, helping someone to clean their home/apartment or whatever other people need done that we can do. The time we spend doing it goes into our "bank account" and we can get that amount of time in having whatever we need done. I have 5 hours in my account and can get say 5 hours of rides (which is usually the thing I need). I'm ashamed to say that I seldom participate in anything either way....giving or taking but now that my mom is gone I'm going to try to get more active in it. Are there volunteer opportunities in your community? Do you participate in any of them?

That Time Bank thing sounds really neat! I wish we had one of those here! What I have done here: Habitat for Humanity: building houses of course, though I just do what I'm told since I don't really have the knowledge Crisis lines, shelters, and victim services: close to my heart because of my own experiences Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly: dinners and other special help for elderly folks Plus, of course, various fundraising walks, runs, and events for major charities, including March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society, and others. There are also of course the volunteer activities you create yourself by just offering to help people who are obviously in need of it! :)

Habitat for Humanitity is very big in my city since we have so many really broken down neighborhoods. I put my name in for that years ago but never heard back. I think it might have to do with my age....who knows.

Hmm, that's weird that they never got back to you! I got involved with Habitat for Humanity first through work, and later did it on my own as well. I forgot a few things with my original list, like Adopt-A-Highway, which I've done through my Unitarian Universalist fellowship, and pretty much anything else I've done as a one-shot community activity through them. We've done a lot of various charity stuff, so it's hard to keep track of it all. In case you hadn't noticed, volunteer work is kind of a big part of my life.

That sounds like a lovely idea, ctry, and I could see where it would be very helpful for all who participate. I believe that if people were to get more involved in helping one another, the world would be such a better place. After all, we don't have time to be angry and rude to each other when we are helping one another out. I think it's great that you should want to become more involved in such a program. I don't believe we have such a program where I live.

I'm going to have to check into this because as far as I knew there was at least one in every state. I have a meeting next week that I'm now going to make a point of going to.

I am sorry even if there was any such opportuinity, my country is so far away from your country that it would not make any serous sense to alert you of any such opportunity

OmG what a fabulous idea! To my knowledge there isnt anything like that out here where we live but being in the country and not near any cities or towns I'm kinda not surprised really...I love the idea of it though..Do you know if thats a common thing here in the U.S? I've never heard of anything like that before neither here nor back in Canada..

I know we have a lot of opportunities for people to volunteer in our area but must admit I was never involved in any. Until I moved I volunteered at our church all the time - helping people move or do shopping, cleaning or different projects around the church. I miss that as it really made me feel good helping others.

I live in a condo complex so there are always things that we can donate our time to. But we don't because their just isn't enough time to do so. Some people volenteer to do community watch and that is usually in the late evenings and I don't want to do that, walk around at night with a group of others, especially in the winter when it is so cold out. Some people visit the older people here to keep them company during the day and to see if they need anything. I don't do that because everyone who does that is about 15 to 20 years older than me and I'm 50 years old. I have nothing in common with these women to have discussions with. Some people cook for others and take it to them or cook in their homes. This is a retirement community and we are thinking about moving because it was a mistake buying this house. We are too young yet even though the complex is for 50 years and older.

We have Habitat for Humanity I helped them many years ago. Now I help the Battered People Shelter and have given my time and items. I wish there were more hours in a day, as I would help other people even more.

that sounds real good, it comes in handy when you need something..I know that around here there is a lot of volunteer work, and oh they would be very happy to get people to do things. but i am not involved in any of it..If i were to volunteer anything it would be for older people because i feel real bad for old people, they often need help and no one wants to do anything for them....
