I love to cook and since there are so many people on mylot that are from the Philippines it got me to thinking I would like to try cooking something from there. I found a recipe for a beef stew and it calls for a cube of ginger. I looked around on the internet and from what I gather it is a chuck of ginger root about 1" long sliced thinly then chopped the other direction once. Does anyone know what is meant for sure by a cube of ginger before I ruin a big pot of stew? Thanks

I agree with quaniq, just slice off apx an inch of the root. Personally I rarely measure anything precisely, I just sort of eyeball it.

I am an eyeballer too. I hate reading instructions and I hate measuring things precisely.

It is just ginger root which is sliced and shaped into like a cube, but not necessarily or exactly a cube. Ginger is commonly used in cooking. The amount to be used depends on the amount of meat that you will cook or depending on your taste for the ginger. Hope this helps.

Joyce, even though the recipe said a cube of ginger but it is good for us to slice the ginger off so that the taste of the ginger will spread out.

That is the size for your ginger. It is normal in my country peoples use the inch as the measurement for ginger, centimeter is to small for a cube size. 1 inch of ginger is a normal size for any dish if you ask me, it just depend on how much you gonna cook. 1 inch is for the length of the ginger root, there is no need for you to measure the actual width to make it a cube.

I think I'll go with about 1", I'm using 1 1/2 lbs stew meat. I am looking forward to it. Thanks for the help.

It's good to know that you love to cook, as it's also flattering that you'd consider one of our meals in your recipe. I also love to cook, but I only get to use ginger on chicken and fish dishes. I know there are some pork or beef recipes that require ginger in it, but I seldom use them. I believe that a cube of ginger is just one that is to readied or prepared, so you can easily chop them and turn them into strips. You see, there are different sizes of ginger. Assuming that you have a huge one, you peel it and then cut them according to what the procedure tells you so..

I found so many great recipes that it was hard to decide which one to start with. I think this will be my first of many attempts to cook Filipino foods. Thanks for the advice.

it means the size of cube . however it does not stated the proper measurement of the cube, i think one centimeter cube will be enough. it's always referring to ginger root with almost the size of a cube but it is not necessary to be exactly a cube... but before we put it in a stew we normally press the ginger so that the flavor of the ginger will come out... i am a good cook also here in the Philippines

that question got me totally stumped as well! i think it means that the size of ginger to add is about a small cube. and i agree with the rest that you should basically slice that small nodule of ginger up. otherwise the flavour will be stuck inside and there is no point then to adding the ginger. i love ginger! especially sliced thinly in dishes with fresh fish.

I thought I had heard all the cooking terms but this was new to me. I used an inch of sliced up ginger and it turned out pretty good I might say, lucky since I still have a meal leftover in the freezer!

Well the sugared ginger that I buy is in a cube shape so maybe in some places you can buy cubes of ginger like you used to be able to buy cubed sugar, I can't say I have seen either but maybe in some countries you can, or maybe it means just cut a cube of ginger to your liking, interesting I have never seen this in recipes....

i'm filipino and a good cook too ;) but we don't have cubes of ginger or is it ginger cube? we simply use ginger roots and slice them (or cube them like you did) or press them. what's the name of the recipe, i'd be happy to help you.

It is just a beef stew Filipino style and has ginger and beef and curry and coconut milk and served with sliced eggs and mango and papaya. All over a bed of rice. It sounded really good and tomorrow night I am going to try it for the first time.
