Medical opinion differs on this topic.. they say a sound sleep of 5 hrs will also do... but the best is 6-8 hrs a day... there was a time when i was working on ship i never used to sleep for more that 4 hrs a day and it continued for almost 25 days... i never felt tired or affected.. so what do you think the definition of good sleep should be??

whether sleep is sufficient or not has something to do with one's age. the younger one is, the more hours of sleep one needs. a baby should have more than ten hours of sleep while an old person only need 5 or 6 hours of sleep. but i think 4 hrs a day is not enough. you don't feel sleepy because you are used to it but it doesn't necessarily mean it's enough for you.

You are probably right.. and it does change with age.. because as you grow older you lose sleep.. my grandmother can never sleep for more than 3- 4 hrs at a stretch.

Wait for urself to turn 50 and you can enjoy that mush of sleep... just kidding... there is no end to what one can wish.... be contented with what you get.. and try and sneak a power nap in the afternoon or between the work.

My mom is in her fifties. She sleeps alot and complain that she's always tired. she sleeps abt 8hrs a day. I would love to sleep for at least 10hrs but I always sleep less than 7hrs. It's killing me. Argh.

Hi shailendraraj, Medical opinion is correct. What they are saying is that a person at least should sleep for a minimum of 5 hours to overcome any problems arising out of sleep disorders. If a person is able to sleep for 6 to 8 hours a day it is very good for health. Minimum 5 hours sleep is being adviced for those who don't sleep properly. Good Luck.

Yeah but human body and mind defy medical sciences.... There was an experiment conducted by NASA and it proved that a human mind will work even if one sleep for 2-3 hrs in the night and get a pawer nap for 30 mins in the day... so you see the power of human mind.

I think it varies by person. I tend to go to bed around 12:30 and wake up at 7 every workday, then I play catch up by sleeping in on the weekends. I learned once from a news story that you could "catch up" on sleep. I don't know if I could go 25 days on only 4 hours a night, but perhaps you were just used to it.

I think its different for everybody, I can go easy with 6 hours of sleep but for other people they need more or less depending on their level of stress.

You are right and have added a new dimension to the discussion... Stress level does affect the Sleep timing of a person. and it varies from person to person.

I read about it, a person must sleep at least 6 hrs. a day. Well, I need 7 hrs. a day or else I don't feel good the next day. In weekends, I sleep longer. I think it depends on the person if he used to it.

Good sleeping means well rested. 8 hrs is the normal hour of sleep and Sleeping has a cycle wherein every cycle is equal to 1 hr and 30 minutes/cycle so if you complete this cycle your sleep is already complete. that's why even though you slept for just an hour and a half you feel like you slept for how many hours.

I think as long as you feel rested, doesn't matter how long the sleep is.. For me, I find I need at least 7 - 9 hours of sleep in order to feel rested

Hello, shailendraraj! adult humans have the biological need to sleep at least 7/8 hours, out of these, the core sleep which usually is of 4 hours is of utmost importance.sleep is a metabolic regulator and sleep disorders effect metabolism. sleep lose or deprivation has adverse effects on the body's systems, causing ill health and disease.prolonged sleep loss is fatal.thank you.all the best.
