"I'm sorry you have the wrong number"

Okay, this is one of my great annoyances in life. When someone calls me and asks "Hey it's Fiona, is Shrek there?" and I say "I'm sorry you have the wrong number." THEN they ask "Oh is this 123-4567?" UGH! I told you that you have the wrong number. Whether the number you dialed is correct or not, it's still WRONG. Shrek doesn't live here! The number you dialed is wrong! I'm not going to tell you my phone number, so either way...it's WRONG! Do you ask if it is the number you dialed? Do you hate when people ask that?

I actually just got off the phone a few minutes ago with a "scammer" who insisted so and so lived here. He was actually saying the name wrong...so yeah they DON'T live here. I tried to correct him but he insisted he had it right. ha! I looked up the number after hanging up the phone and yup, it's one of those "you've won a free trip" kinda deals.

At least he didn't try to sell you instead. One time at work we had someone call looking for someone to sell the newspaper to. WHen I said they had the wrong number he was like "well are you interested" and I was like "uh... i have it" and hung up. I don't get the paper but I don't want someone to try and sell it to me over the phone!

Yeah it's annoying but I can understand why they do it too. They just want to see if they dialed the number wrong or if they've been misinformed/they actually have the wrong number. This way they don't call you right back again. I don't know for a fact that I've ever done it myself but if I have it was long before I got a cell phone. If get a "sorry wrong number" then I just look at the number I dialed to see where I went wrong. Usually in that case it's my error LOL.

Oh I understand it, but even if they dialed the right number it's still wrong because Shrek doesn't live here :p Cell phones really help prevent dialing wrong numbers that's for sure. Unless you have a number saved and they change their number without telling you :x i've had that happen!

It does not bother me when people ask it - because this way I am less likely to get the same person calling back again with the wrong number, it gives them information to know whether they copied their number wrongly, or just dialed it wrong.

That's true. I just don't like giving out my number. So if they ask and it's wrong I don't get as annoyed by it.

I don't usually get annoyed by people asking if "this is 123-4567". It's actually an irrelevant question, but I'll just politely respond with "No, this is not" without giving my number. I don't get annoyed because there are times when people dialed the number correctly, but unfortunately, whoever gave them the number to call may have made a mistake giving them the wrong number, but the caller may not be aware of that. So by asking "is this 123-4567", they are actually verifying if they had dialed the number they had intended to dial. What I am annoyed with are callers who do not speak when I pick up my telephone and say "hello". Instead they put down the phone without saying anything the moment I pick it up. Some others just respond "sorry, wrong number" or just "wrong number", then immediately put down the phone, the moment I answered it. Rather rude, I would say of such behavior. Usually the people who do not say anything are the friends of my maid who prefer only to speak if my maid takes the call. The other possibility I can think of is suspicious people who are probably checking if someone is at home, and these people may be up to no good.

Well my point is that whether they dialed the wrong number or they dialed the right number.. it's still a wrong number. If they dialed 123-4567 rather than 123-4568.. it's a wrong number. If Gingy's number is 123-4567 and they are trying to reach rapunzel who gave them that number... it's still a wrong number. I just think it's impolite to ask someone what their phone number is. You should deal with your wrong number on your own. That's what phone books and such are for. Also, I'm not a fan of people just hanging up when they realize they called a wrong number, but it's usually no sweat off my back.

No, I don't hate it that people ask whether they reached the number they were trying to get. I don't want them dialing my number again, and so if they are under some mistaken idea that my number is somebody else's number I want them to know ASAP that it isn't.

I usually only dial numbers that are pre programmed into my phone, it holds many many numbers. But i live in a small town, and i've gotten some pretty weird wrong numbers.. People call and think that they have reached the right person even though they haven't. HEY MAN, (first of all i'm a girl and dont sound like a man) Are we still on for tonight man!? i'm like i dunno what do we have planned.. lol sometimes i like to play along with people. .

Woo hoo, you are funny! It annoys me as well. When I call for The Gingerbread Man, and they tell me I have the wrong number, I DO NOT repeat the number to check and see if it is the right one. I believe them, I don't need it confirmed again. But you'd think the unfamiliar voice speaking to Fiona would be their first clue.

Ha ha. i was going to use Shrek and Gingy instead but my fingers typed Fiona first :) I always figure the voice should be a clue also... but it never seems to be one.

This is a huge annoyance for me too, but you know what really gets me? When people leave a message on your answering machine for who they're looking for, and you say your flippin' name ni your greeting!!! We get that all the time and it drives me nuts. We say 'Blah ,blah, blah. This is Jessica nad Michael...' and people will still leave messages for said mystery person. Grrrr! I hate wrong number callers though. I hate it even more when they act like you're lying to them after they tell you your own number but still swear so and so lives there or gave you that number. Gah...idiots everywhere.

Ha ha! Yeah I love when I get messages that are like "hey junebug what's up let's do something friday call me" and I'm like wtf...I'm not junebug! But since I only have a cell phone, my cell phone answering machine is my phone number. So if people get to the machine they hear the phone number and know they were wrong. or hopefully know! One time at work we had someone call and they were like "hey can i talk to mandy" or something like that and I was like "you have the wrong phone number" and he called back a few minutes later and asked for mandy again. I was like 'uh you have the wrong number." and he's all "i'm mandy's husband" "ok but you have the wrong number" "she works for the bus" "okay but this is the library" "oh okay well can i talk to susan, she'll know me" "you have the wrong number, this isn't the bus place it's the library!" and i hung up. Honestly, that was our conversation. Idiots~

lol...I love that you used Fiona and Shrek! This is the reason I love my caller ID! If a number or the name doesn't look familiar I don't answer the phone. Actually even when it does look familiar sometimes I don't answer but that's a different discussion...lol. I remember those days though and you are right after saying you have a wrong number and they say is this whatever I would get nuts and usually say something rude to them. If I dial a wrong number I apologize and hang up...end of call!

Ha ha. Well it's not like I'd use real names :p I have caller ID on my cell phone, but I'm applying for jobs and stuff so I usually answer it unless it's a private call. But this also happens at work and don't you answer the phone at your job? You don't have caller ID there do you? Apologizing is always the polite way to go!

I would hate that too. If in the rare occasion I call the wrong number I usually can tell by the voice I have the wrong number and will say sorry I think I dialed the wrong number. But if I can't tell I will ask for the person I am looking for. If they say I have the wrong number, I say sorry and hang up. I wouldn't ask about the number or anything. I think that is rude. I don't like it if someone does that to me either. However there was this one time when a VERY friendly guy with a sexy voice called and it was the wrong number, we ended up doing some chatting and I didn't mind at all. LOL

Yeah, it's better to apologize for dialing the wrong number than to just hang up.I think it's totally rude to ask for the number. I've had people ask me and so I'm like 'what number did you dial?" I just don't want these people knowing my number! They may call me again! ha ha. I've never met interesting people on the phone.. most of mine sound all dumb or creepy/

If I am the one that made the erroneous call, I usually do ask if the number I was trying to dial is the number I actually dialed. That way I know if I just made a mistake, or if the number written down is wrong. What gets on my nerves is people who ask me who is this? What do you mean who is this?!? You called here who is this?!? It gets on my nerves whether its a wrong number, or its someone who just dialed in. You have no right to ask who answered the phone before you identify yourself. And if you're not family, you still have no right to ask!!!

Note: I do not ask for the phone number where I have dialed. That is rude! I will ask if the number I am trying to dial is the one I actually dialed, but I never ask for the number outright. I have been asked a couple of times for my number when this occurred. But what I do is flip the question back to the caller. "What number did you dial?"
