http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,324506,00.html I was reading this article about a young man who at 16 went to jail for murder. I am not here to discuss his innocence or if he should get released early. I want to know what you think of prison life based on this - let's see - he got married, became an electricians helped, he plays softball and soccer as well as guitar. I never realized that there were so many groups, activities and organizations in prison. Is this the way that you picture prison to be?

It really annoys me - ok I live in the town in Michigan that is home to one of the largest walled prisons in the US. I was born here and have lived most of my life here. We hear it all - can you imagine a riot because the inmates didn't get steak for dinner at least one night a week? I was supporting myself and 4 kids at the time that happened and we didn't know what 'steak' was - hadn't seen it in our house in a couple years at least. Several have gotten law degrees while in prison - I work to support them and pay for their schooling while my son has to join the Air Force to get his college paid for. The big thing now is the over crowding and last year they put up temporary housing for the inmates - oh gee they didn't have air-conditioning.... I'm familure with 'life in prison' and how rough they Don't have it.

They riot unless they get steak once a week. Wow, must be nice, I am not going to see it is years between the times we have it, but it is certainly not a regular on the menu. And I hear you on the college thing. I worked with a guy who was telling me, while he was incarcerated he got a degree at a private college that I could barely afford to drive by. Something is definitely wrong here.

I hear alot of these stories - seeing as how the prision is a large employer in our area I've known a lot of people who have worked there, including my Mom, one of my sisters, my ex-husband, and a good friend of mine's husband. You would be sick, horrified, and furious at some of the things I've heard. My sister worked in the 'intake' department - doing paperwork for new inmates. One guy actually threw feces on her and she got repremanded because she swore when he did it.

I have to put myself in his mother's shoes. If that were any of our children, we would want mercy for him. He was sixteen when this happened. He has served twenty years. I believe that he deserves a second chance. We all do stupid things as teens. It is by the grace of God that a lot of us are not also serving time in jail for something that we did as teens. I know of people who have murdered for less than love and did not spend one day in jail.

I don't care what he did at this point. My point is that prison in many ways sounds better then the life a lot of people on the outside don't have and are envious of.

Okay, I am sorry. I did get off the topic after reading that. It is common knowledge that people usually live a better life in jail, than those on the street. This is some of the reason that there are a lot of repeat offenders. They get three square meals, medical, they can get jobs and earn money, watch television, get an education and the whole nine yards. They have their homies in there with them. I think if jails were more like a place of punishment, they wouldn't be so over crowded.

Here in Britain prisoners are treated like VIP especially if they are notorious, in fact the notorious prisoner the more luxuries he gets. There were letters in the paper recently about poor pensioners writing in to say they would love to be put into prison, meals, luxuries, tv, central heating provided, compared to what pensioners get it's a complete joke! No bills, no rent, no taxes, comfort, food, I think most pensioners would jump at the chance for time inside. Prisons are like holiday camps!

You know, one year it was really hot where my parents lived and I remember my mother telling me that they were having people spend the nights in an empty floor of the jail because they had AC and their homes did not and they were suffering the effects of the heat. You are right...many people would jump at the chance for that life

Oh yes prison life isn't bad at all..They have lots of activities and get GED's, learn a trade and get better health care then people on the outside do..I do not think that prisoners should be mistreated at all, i could never mistreat another human being but what the benefits are in prison these days is so great that it is hardly considered a punishment anymore..My son has spent the biggest part of his life in jail,it saddens me that he has chosen this life, while my other children are successful people and are living a good life.but this wayward son of mine chooses the wrong things in life..He is so smart and talented and has so many excellent asets but he just cannot stay straight...He has gotten his GED, got a trade, had 3 surgeries, glasses, has has become a chef in prison...He likes prison and does not mind it at all.He is a model prisoner....I am not proud of this believe me, but I just have seen it with my own eyes...My son was doing good, he was living with us, holding down a job, and he had some criminal charges against him and he went and turned himself in...He said he was ready for a vacation, can you imagine?

Do you think this kind of prison life acts as a deterrent? what do you think of the prison life described above?

No wonder there are so many crimials in this world, when prison can be so exciting. I do not think it is fair that murderers can lead a normal life. Us innocent people are struggling to pay the rent and put food on the table. Let alone be able to do extra curricular activities, like play the guitar. I think prison needs to be alot tougher, people need to be scared to go there. I honestly did not think that prison was like this. I thought they had boring food to eat, a small cell a dark room and some bars to look at. I also thought they could go outside (prison yard) for maybe an hour a day for sunshine and exercise that is it.

Well dang. What are we all doing slaving to make a dollar and not be able to get out and enjoy the outdoors to play soccer and softball with friends because of working to put food on our table and a roof over our head 10 to 12 hours a day??? Let's all just go to prison and have a grand ole time. If those who are single go just look, you can get married and not even have to pay for it, those outside of the prison walls will pay for it along with your education.

That is the way I feel. I was shocked when I was reading about how wonderful he was - raising money for Toys for Tots. They must get paid real good in prison...besides the 3 hots and a cot.

Uh, well, apart from the constant rape and murder, criminals actually lead a pretty swell life considering the deeds they've done. Man, I can't wait to go to jail now! They'll probably start putting Chuck E. Cheeses in them now and everything! Because, you know, serial killers are people too. Crazy psychopathic murdering people who rape your family and put mirrored shards in their eyes. Yeah, that Hannibal Lecter has the highest score on the prison's Dance Dance Revolution machine and Charles Manson's finished writing his 2008 Sommelier's Guide. Great. Good to know the people who make us unable to sleep at night are living it up. Of course, the groups are just another form of government proselytizing to attempt to turn young school children and general people they don't trust into service robots. I imagine it's a bit hard to rehabilitate a bunch of criminals by sticking them together in close proximity and expecting them to obey the rules, especially when they can easily just rape each other and schiv each other for their place in the lunch line. Of course, there's always the option to just NOT commit crimes instead.

I would assume that people like Manson are kept isolated from the rest of the population. And you are right there is an option not to commit a crime in the first place.
