Does music help you consentrate or is it the opposite effect?

With me music that has no lyrics helps me consentrate on other tasks. Particularly if I in the depths of study or writing. But many people are actually distracted by it. Do you find music helpful or not, when attempting to consentrate?

i feel music which has pure soul and rhythm would definitely help us in our concentration.but music which is full of rock and punk would distract not only us but others too.

I find it distracting because most of the classical music I have played so I would listen to the music and critique it instead of working.and with pop music, I would be singing along. Whenever I study or work , I put on a non musical t.v show or movie.

when i start to study something the music is an added benefit but i find myself losing it when in depth and don't hear it at all. to me it's not a distraction

4 me... Instrumental Jazz works when I suffer from insomnia, & I'm up at 4 am on myLot... 4 me silence is deafening! I walk 4 excersise & ride my bike when the weather is warm... My headphones R on right now & I'm listening 2 "Blue Rondo La Turk" by the Dave Brubeck quartet... Not everone's cup 'o tea, but mine... AC

It really matters what it is that I am doing. Cleaning - really need it cranked, starting a new creative project - depends on my mood. When I am working on my business, I can't have the music on because I have to make a lot of phone calls and can get distracted.

It depends. If the music is new for me, my mind centers on it. If it's an old song I've heard a lot, then it does help me concentrate on what I'm doing. The only condition that just puts me off completely is a completely silent room.

it depends which song i listen at the moment.when i listen my favourite song that mean i will not concentrate my mind on other things,i get deep into the environment of the songs.at other side,i will not distract my mind if the song is poor to me

Well in my case I enjoy listening to music while I do dishes or other things around the house. When it comes to studying I prefer silence. I just need to focus at the task and lyrics will make my brain stray.

I find it more helpful to play music to concentrate on everything. For me it's easily done as I seem to be really good at multi tasking. It also makes it go by faster and in no time done with whatever it is I am working on. However if I am sitting down to write my poetry I prefer it to be quiet as can be. Seems that it helps the flow of my thoughts come out faster. Always been this way for me. So I suppose it depends on what you are working on.

For me music really does help me concentrate when I am studieng, but you wont beleive that only HEAVY METAL and alternitive rock makes me study much better and it evan puts me to sleep if I am lieng down and I am tierd... Especially listeneing to my IPod during a long trip. You guys might think that this isn't possible but its true!
