Let's answer a hypothetical question today! You are stuck on a deserted island with enough battery in your cell phone to make one call. Who would you call? Why?

Well, I assume that I would want to get off the island. I would call the coast guard - search and rescue and hope they have locators like the police do for cell phones.

Why. 911/999 of course. Otherwise I would phone my wife at work, 'cos she's always there and would know what to do.

I'd have to call the Coast Guard, anybody else you'd call wouldn't know how to track where the signal came from or how to interpret marine charts. Talking with the Coast Guard you'd be able to describe the island, ie: whether it has tropical vegetation or not, and other factors that might be able to let them identify where the island is. Hahaha...hopefully the cell phone has GPS in it so that it'd be easier to track from sattelite. As much as I'd like to say I'd call one of my children, they wouldn't have to power to trace the call or anything, so I'd have to tell the Coast Guard their phone number, etc, and to tell them I love them.

that was the same initial impulse I had!!! who ya gonna call? GHOST BUSTERS! strange, that movie was so long ago, and I really did not like it - but that phrase has become somehow iconic.

I'd call the most intelligent and quick thinking person in my list. Othherwise I'd be getting a whole lot of "OMG what happened to you?" "We've been so worried about you" and so on which would be a complete and utter waste of time. The person would have to be able to shut up and listen carefully and follow instructions. I reckon, I'd be stuck on that island.

I find it curious that there would be cell phone reception (towers) on such a desolate island. But, if I WERE able to contact someone I guess it would be not the rescue squad but someone who loves me who would make sure to tell the right people and pressure them until they rescued me.

Hmmm thinks about it.. More than likely 911 and give the location where I was to get off the island. *laughing* For you said "stuck".. to me that means you are not wanting to be there.

I would call 911. If they are anything like the local emergency responders here, every police car, fire truck and ambulance in the area would show up. (Of course, they'd have to get to my by boat).

Oh man the first thing I'd do is shut my phone off and have good rest then when I do call anyone it would be my daughter. Why her ? Because she's most important in my life.

The coast guard or someone to rescue me. Once I was safe I would then find a phone and call the important people in my life.

While I was reading your post, my mind is torn between my mom or my husband. But as of the moment, I've decided to call my ever loving mother. I'd call her because I know she will be worried and concerned enough to look for me and exhaust all means necessary to find me. And on my part, I'd be so descriptive as to my whereabouts - the views around me and everything. I'd also tell her to ask for help from my husband. Further, I'd inform her beforehand that my cellular phone only has enough battery to make just one phone call. So, if they'd call me at a later time, they might not be able to do so. And when my battery goes empty while calling her, I'd be conscious enough to tell her again and again that if ever they won't find me, I love her, my family and everyone I know and to please tell them that. And then I'll pray until they find me or the sharks find me, who ever come first.

I would have to phone my Wife and children, and hope that they would have the common sense to try and get some help to me one way or another.

i think that i will firstly think to get off of that island. I will call the coast guard and may rescue me and will hope that they have GSM or CDMA locators to find my location exactly.... thanks for the wonderful discussion.
