Do You Still Write Letters?

United States
February 7, 2008 10:15am CST
With the growth of the internet and the success of email, many people don't take the time to actually sit down and write a letter. My aunt loves to write letters and although she does use email, will be brief in her replies, but will soon reply with a letter of 5-7 page length. Personally, I have come to completely rely on email to keep in contact with my family and friends. I think I've just become to lazy to actually write out a letter and now consider it a chore. Which do you prefer to use?

Hello, kbourgerie! now a days letter writing has remained with the students for writing at examinations.now in the age of internet and mobile phone the world has become so closure that nobody likes to spend time for writing letters to their friends and relations.it is just wastage of time.i always prefer to talk over phone.you will be astonished to know that i had finalized my daughter's marriage in just three hours which might had taken nearly a month if i had written letters.thank you.

Well, I'm much like you, although I hate the phone and believe it or not avoid it at all costs. I do, however, depend on the internet completely for remaining in contact. Except of course for sending packages.

Yeah I would haveto think about this one.... hmm... Lets put it this way, I have never written a letter to anybody in my life! LOL So my answer would definately be using email, fast messenging services and text on cell phones and facebook...

I am assuming that you are fairly young. I can understand that what you are most familiar with is today's technology. My kids are even younger than you and even though they have written "thank you" letters, actually believing in the future that they might sit down and actually write a letter is probably not realistic.

I enjoy writing letters but it has become too expensive with postage always increasing so now I usually use email. I still write letters to my grandmother who doesn't use email.

I never thought about older citizens not using email. You have a good point there.

Well, being practical would be email. Though I really like receiving mail, especially from someone dear to me so it encourages me to send them a letter as well and I hope it would go on like that. There's really something special in mail that email can't do aside from communicating your message quicker.

I like receiving mail too, but I'm so used to getting emails now, that my excitement in the mail everyday is anything at all! LOL.

Well, when you don't get any regular mail, even the bills start to look good. Just kidding. Nobody wants bills, just something with your name on it.

Although I do use my email...I tender to be very old school. I write letters-even to my daughter so she can get some mail. I send b-day cards, Christmas cards, anniversary cards, etc to all I know and love. I write to my grandmother-in-law, mother, and father once a week. I know the joy you get when something other than a bill or junk comes in the mail so I try to give that joy to others. I ususally handmake the cards. Sometimes I'll write to someone for no reason. My daughter and I send cards and letters to children's hospitals, soldiers over seas, senior citizen homes, etc. There's something to be said about the written word. It is timeless. Its beautiful, it comes from the heart-so much moreso because it does take time and effort.

Another good point. Getting a card via email is not nearly as personal as getting them in the mail. How wonderful of you and your daughter to take the time to send letters to children, soldiers and seniors. I wrote a post on what I most proud of and if I were you, had you replied, although I am sure you don't seek credit for it that this is something you should be incredibly proud of. In fact it gives me an idea for a new discussion. Thanks.

I'm really glad that you chose to respond again. I was going to message you to ask if it was ok that I use you as an example in another discussion, but since you weren't yet added as a friend, I couldn't do that. I did go ahead and mention your efforts, but not your name and I really hope that was ok. I can't tell you how much I respect what you are doing.

You're very welcome and thank you. I do not deserve any credit...I'm simply doing what I feel we all should do-be kind to one another, show respect, realize that we're not the center of the universe, and taking the time to teach our children the same values...I forgot to add that I hand write Thank you notes for every gift I recieve, my 3 year old son recieves, my husband receives-and have my daughter write her own-she fights me on this though.

In most of the cases I usually write up E-mail but sometimes I take my time writing letter's to those of my friend's who don't have internet or the only way to contact them is by writing lettler's.Still I find sending E-mail's is much more fast, cheap, reliable, easy and fun to do whereas the old patterned letter's have many disqualities now a days. So,I think in the only which I prefer and use as my default way for sending message's to my friends in no time what so ever.

I can completely understand and relate to what you are saying. When you want to convey something really quickly, naturally email is the only way to go. Theres not only the time the mail takes, but also the chance that it could get lost.

E-mail is faster and there is no postage to worry about, so I tend to use that a lot more. I don't write letters anywhere near as much as I would like to. In a way it is kind of sad how technology has gotten to the point where we put convenience over aesthetically pleasing and personable. That is probably the one thing I do not like about a lot of these new breakthroughs in technology is that they tend to discourage creativity by putting all their emphasis on convenience. So, yes, I do consider writing letters to be a chore, however, I wish I could do it more often, and e-mail and instant messaging are great ways to stay in contact with far away friends on a daily basis and even make new friends on occasion. But as far as personability (if that is even a word!) goes, I think the old ways can be best, and with that in mind I do love receiving and giving letters on occasion. I haven't written a real letter in years and probably should do that soon.

Sadly I have to admit that I do not write letters anymore- I barely write out checks with the new age of the check card. I too had a beloved aunt who wrote to me reliously when I was a child- my biggest pen pal by far! (I miss her, may she rest in peace). I will admit I tend to make excuses for not handwriting things claiming to never have time. I am sitting here typing this looking across the room at the drawer that contains the x-mas cards I swore to myself I would personally write out last year, 2007- but no- sadly there they sit. I really need to get back to that- it is so much more personal- thanks for the wake up call :)

You are welcome, but don't feel bad, we are guilty of doing the same thing. Yes, I know many people who don't write their traditional Christmas cards with all the years updates and things. Now they come in an email. LOL.

I never write letters anymore except for the occasional note in Christmas cards. I just use my email. Stamps have become to expensive to send letters anymore. My writing is not the best anymore either so it is easier to read if I type the stuff.

You are right stamps have become expensive, but I think they are worth their weight in gold for the person actually receiving the written word on the other end.

I love writing letters but I am getting lazy. These days if I can e-mail or type the letter I will. As a child we were made to write thank you letters to all our relatives except our parents. I have to say it was often a chore, but one that I wish would come back because I do love to receive handwritten letters too. The other thing that I wish, is that my handwriting could be much better. Maybe then I would feel even better about writing the few letters that I currently produce each year.

No, I just email now but I wish I wrote letters. I know they're basically the same thing as an email (just more expensive and time consuming) but I love writing them. Besides I live near everyone I need to contact, so there'd be no point in me sending a letter because I'd probablly bump into them around town before they'd get it :D

I dont think its the same thing as writing a letter. I would think that a letter to a friend or relative would be much more personal than what you may post here on mylot. Yes mylot gives you the opportuntity to express yourself, but its not the same as sending an email or a handwritten letter.

Well I don't think that pen and paper are a cold way of responding, unless I am misunderstanding you. I think taking the time to actually sit down and write is much more of an effort than email. The phone is also more personal, but I just don't like using the phone much.

I posted a similar discussion many months ago, kbourgerie, and I was overwhelmed with all the responses I received. Letter writing has become a lost art. I remember when I used to write lengthy letters to friends and relatives all the time. Now, however, many of them have passed on(or use email), so I don't often get the opportunity to write letters often. I have considered finding a pen pal.

Yes, I am very surprised by the number of responses I have gotten to this post, but then again I'm always surprised by what captures people's interest.

I prefer e-mail mostly because it is free. Letters cost postage, envelopes, and paper. So every time I send a letter through snail mail that would be more than 50 cents. And think about how much work it takes to earn 50 cents on myLot! lol. So yeah, that's why I like e-mail better.

I write to him each and every day, and he writes to me every day too.... sometimes he saves them and sends a few together at once, as do I, but toghether we are making the post office a heck of a lot of money...lol
