Should the speed limit on the highways be increased?

Here it seems like nobody ever follows the speed limit. Everyone is well over the limit. What is everyone's opinion?

Well, have you ever been to Illinios? On I think it is I55 just outside of Chicago, the Speed limit is like 70. The biggest problem with that is even at 70, people are Honking their horns at you and trying to make you go faster or try and force you off the road. And the biggest thing is, most of these are Truckers. There is nothing wrong with having a Speed limit of say 55-60 on the highways if people would only Drive that speed. I hate the ones who are speeding in and out of traffic and seem to never get caught, and usually doing like 75-80 even if you are driving 60. And at the same token I HATE the ones who are going to 50 and in the 4th lane of traffic, or the ones in the express lane going 55 when the Speed limit is 60. They need to have a lane just for the Slower people as well.

Wow. I did not know there were speed limits that high elsewhere. Our speed limits here are mainly 55 and on one highway here it is 65mph. The truckers do drive very fast and also cut me off a lot when they lane change.

I think as long as your controlling your vechile and leave ample space to stop if need to be then you should be able to go as fast as you want. But you should be stop if you are not driving safely while going fast.

I think that is what our state is doing now. They will pull over people that are driving fast but recklessly and are considered road rage. Someone has to do commit multiple violations to get pulled over.

If anything, it should be lowered. Gas prices are high because we continue to use more than we can produce. Lowering the speed limit and punishing those who excede it will make driving safer and reduce gas consumption.

I agree with you there completely. The faster people drive the more gas is consumed.

I do not see the point of raising the speed limit. Each time they raise the speed limit, those that normally break the limit will break the limit still. This would just mean that person would go faster than what they normally would when the speed limit was lower. In other words, some seem to think that as long as they are going 74 in a 65 speed limit, it is okay because they are not doing 10 mph over. However, if you raise that speed limit to 75, it will just mean that those same people will be driving 84. Therefore, I see no point in raising the speed limit.

That is very true that people would drive even faster if they increased the speed limit. Maybe they should lower the speed limit but that may not help either.

No I don't think it should be increased because there will always be those people that think they have to go faster than the speed limit. Its almost like those people do it just to not follow the rules. We were on the thruway one day and the speed limit is 65. I know it was wrong but we were in a hurry, so we were doing 80. Cars were passing us like crazy and even tractor trailers. Can you imagine if one of those big trucks got in an accident?

I don't think it should be increased either as we have too many maniacs driving around as it is now. Would like to see more done to prevent people from speeding.

I think it definitly should on interstate highways...especially in Mississippi because you will drive for an hour in some parts without ever hitting a town of size that would cause anyone to slow down.

Some places already have speed limits that are very high and some places have speed limits are not that high but still people drive too fast and carelessly.

No I don't think the speed limit should be increased because no matter what the limit is there will always be people who will drive over that limit. Here in Australia on the open road/highway the speed limit is either 100 or 110 kph, depending on the state of the road etc. In the towns it is usually 50kph, although during certain times (school start and finish times), the speed limit is mostly 40kph. We do a lot of driving and do not exceed the speed limit but it is not unusual to see some lunatic pass us doing well over the limit. However there is often justice because further up the road we will see this same lunatic being booked by the Police. LOL The Northern Territory in Australia did not have any speed limits on the highways, but from the 1st January this year they now do. The change was bought about in an effort to reduce the accident rate and so the reduction will be good.

Good answer. Just wish something could be done about the speeding and careless driving out there.

Yes, it should be adjusted accordingly to weather and traffic conditions. I think we'll reach that level in some years.

It should be lowered for weather and traffic conditions I think. Need more cops or technology to stop the speeders or harsher penalities.

Not at all. Honestly I think there should be more cops patroling the highways, to stop the speeders from causing future accidents. I am one of the rare few who do the limit and it bothers me then others go racing past me. They scare me. I normally have at least 1 child in my car and I dont want to get into an accident and loose my children due to some one elses stupidity.

I agree that there should be either more cops on patrol or somehow have more surveillance cameras taking pictures of peoples plates so tickets can be given to them. Something needs to be done but there is not enough cops to ticket everyone. It annoys me with all the road rage going on these days and makes me a bit nervous to drive.

No, the speed limit should not be increased. If it is, then the speeders will even speed more. Everyone is always in a rush to get somewhere. If anything, they should lower them a little.

i live in portugal and there are some highways that have a very bad design and in thoose the speed limit should be decrease. in others i think the limit should stand and a authority should be a little bit more tolerant

If anything, there should be more enforcement of people exceeding the limit of the posted speed. The speed limits are set to ensure safety of all drivers.
