Do any of you buy and use the canvas bags some stores have available?

I have noticed how often being frugal and environmentaly smart go hand in hand. I use everything up and I try not to get things that I wount use. I have bought a few of thoes bags that I carry to the store so that I dont need the plastic bags the store provides. I guess if we all brought our own bags to the store the store could save money by not having to provide the bags to us and hopefully pass the savings on to us. How many of you have reusable bags that you take to the store? And why did you make this choice?

I have to admit I bought a few of the canvas bags and I continually forget to bring them with me. The plastic bags they give out at the stores around here aren't any good for re-using since they're so flimsy. I end up using them for trash. Not all the stores have recycling bins for these anyway and if it saves me buying trash bags, I guess it's a form of recycling. Anyway, I bought the reusable bags because I thought it was environmentally sound, I don't like the idea of all that plastic floating around, and of course hopefully they are a better choice because they won't tear and break..whit

I definately count using the bags as trash bags as recycling. It is using something that otherwise you would have to buy a trash bag for, which would make someone make one.

I have a couple of fabric bags that I keep in my truck for trips to the grocery store. Most of the time I forget to bring them in and use them though :-( I'm trying to be better about it though. However, I do reuse the plastic bags for the wastebaskets at home, so it is not completely wasteful. At the moment, we have such a surplus of plastic bags that I am trying REALLY hard to remember to use the fabric bags for a while.

I forget my bags a lot too. I have never thought of keeping them in the car. I might remember them more if they were right there in plain site. I will try that. Thanks for the tip.

I have a few small bags I use. They are bigger than the ones the stores sell but they are not so big that once filled you cant carry them anymore. I have 2 big Ikea bags and once full they cant be carried. Great for paper and boxes but dont tyy putting any weight in them.

As I work in a grocery store, they actually gave us one of these free and I recently purchased another one. I like them and it is nice to not have so many plastic bags around. However, I do recycle the plastic ones too and use them for several other things including trash. It is a option to take my own bag or get theirs and I choose to do both- depending on where I am and what I am doing.

I dont. But my mom does. Probably because carrying one big bag of her own is more convenient than having a dozen of them flinging in her two hands. I like the way you're thinking though, about the savings and passing it along even to the customers.

Im not sure if the stores really would pass on the savings to us. They might just keep them for them selves. It would be nice if we knew that what we did would come back to us. Then we wouldnt have to do things just because it is the right thing to do.
