How come all school buses do not have seat belts? I think that they should! It seems like a pretty basic safety feature dont you think? Do school buses in other countries have seat belts for the children?

My daughter rides to school in a mini shcool bus and it has car seats built into the seats because in my state 6 years and younger have to be in a car seat. The regular buses don't have seatbelts though. There was something on the news once that they are safer without them but I can't remember why.

Its great that they put carseats in the buses for the little guys. But I am comfused why one year a child needs a carseat and the next its ok not to buckle up. this does not make any sense to me.

I live in Australia & we don't have sealtbelt in bus's here either. It has something to do with the cost of putting them in i think. I'm not sure exactly but there have been a few bus accident here with injured children & parents keep asking for belts to be fitted but the governments just cant seem to justify the cost of doing it. I believe they should have seatbelts as well - there are a lot of kids on board so they should all be strapped in - it's against the law to not wear a seatbelt in the car, why cant it be the same for buses. I think they also have the problem of not being able to inforce the seatbelt rule - that many kids on a bus, who is going to make sure the kids are all actually buckled in? It's a hard one. I hope they install them soon though, i wouldn't send my daughter to school on a bus if i knew she wouldn't be wearing a seatbelt, she's far too precius to me.

The way I look at is, right now the child doesn't even have the opportunity to put on a seat belt. So if they put seatbelts on the buses and still kept the high backed seats, at least the children who have been taught by their parent to always wear a selt belt could buckle themselves in. Im definately with you about not letting my little guy ride seatbeltless.

The school I used to work in had their own minibus and because it was brand new bought by the PTA funds, it had seatbelts fitted. I can't understand why laws haven't been put in place that all buses which are designed to carry children to and from school to be compulsory to have seatbelts. It seems so basic and yet would save so many lives if these laws were passed. If I had children going to and from school on the bus I wouldn't feel happy that the buses didn't have seatbelts. Although I can see the other side of the coin, getting the children to put their seatbelts on and keep them on!

Hello there, it is a very good question as I never notice before. When my dauther was younger, my husband and I drove her to the kindergarden and school with our own car. Now she is bigger, and the middle school is nearby so that she doesn't need to get on the bus anymore. But because of your question, I check with a couple of parents and realize that there are NO seat belts provided on the school buses!

Good question! I have always wondered the same thing. City buses don't have them either and they drive in crazy traffic everyday, all day. I hope there is a good reason why.

I think city buses should have them too!
