I love letters and snail mail, they are more meaningful that text messages or emails... sigh... sometimes even if I'm writing to a person whom I'm gonna spend my whole day with, I write short letters from time to time..

I don't write many letters now that I have a computer and can type things and send them in an email or print them out. It is alot faster to type than write for me.

it certainly is faster, but do you not think we lose some of the beauty of the written word in our scramble for ever decreasing transmition times?

Yes I do but according to your other discussion you deem teaching reading and writing to be outmoded. I quote your phrase "can we finally rid ourself from the tyranny of literacy" So in effect you want to deprive yourself from enjoying reading and writing letters!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there! I still love writing letters. I give my husband letters on special occassions. I also write to my relatives in Manila that doesn't have an e-mail address and are not used to internet. I love receiving them too. I like something that I can always keep. I have a special box for letters that were given to me. I call them my memory box.

No your not alone. I like to send letters to, and adore receiving them. But I am not as good as I should be. I notice that as I get older my letters get shorter and that when an e mail address is offered I usually use that. It is the route of least resistance. Both my sister and I were taught as children that letter writing was courteous (as in thank you letters) and that as a family who (at that time) had several elderly members living alone, a thoughtful way of remembering them. This paid off. When I went away to boarding school I used to receive plenty of letters each term - but usually from elderly aunts rather than credibility building attractive young girls. But I did get one or two of those too.

I write letters and i can write very good. However with the computer nowadays it takes very little time to write a e-mail But... writing a letter and send it to someone with regular mail is still known as "snail mail" because it's communication which is usefull beyond the internet :-)

Well don't worry you are most definitely not alone! Although nothing beats the convenience of E-mails and even Short Messaging System (SMS), I fell that nothing can quite replace the personal touch of writing a letter. In my opinion, you are able to feel the emotions of the sender, be it happiness, joy or sadness, and that is something that only hadnwritten letters can deliver.

Yes, I do write letters until now. Email seems so impersonal, because nowadays, everyone receives email from everybody else. So I write letters only to those closest to me. Ask yourself, which one do you prefer to receive? I think receiving a written letter makes me feel that the other person took the time, effort and care to do this just for me. So receiving a written letter makes the person feel special.

Last year I was without a computer and had to write letters by hand to let people know my new address. It felt strange at first after using email. Some friends responded by sending me cards with handwritten messages which made me feel good and I always sent them a nice hand written card in return. Now I have my own laptop I use email instead.
