In the past I have downloded a anti virus program that was called I think AVG or something like that...because my computer was running a little slower...and after i installed it and let it scan my computer my computer wouldn't hardly do anything..it would freeze up and just take forever to start any programs and others have said this too...so does anyone know why this happens and does anyone know any programs for anti virus and anti spyware that wont slow your computer down or anything??

I've used AVG for years and have had no problems with it whatsoever. I've used others that I had to pay for (McAfee and Norton) and they screwed up my computers big time. Even after un-installing I still had issues. I had to get a techie to go into the bowels of my computer and delete every little detail that either of those ever existed before it would function properly. Have you tried cleaning out other junk from your computer, old programs, etc? have you run a de-frag?

I have a question for you. I don't know what you had before, but I had an anti-spyware and anti-virus with a firewall. My son comes over and uninstalls the security I had and added the AVG. Now that is all and good, but he forgot that my windows firewall was disabled because I had the other one on it. So when he uninstalled my security, he didn't consider my firewall. Check and make sure you have a firewall, because if you don't, you are going to have some major problems..

I've also tried many anti-virus before. i've used Norton, AVG, Mcafee PC-cillin etc. but one proves to be most effective NOD32 Smart Security. nod32 really cleans my infected files and protects my pc from viruses, trojans and other malicious programs and most importantly it does not eat your computer's resources so it does slow's your pc. it also has a great firewall. i really recommend this antivirus program.

Hihi. There is nothing wrong with AVG. In fact, the free AVG is what I am using now and what I have been recommending to others. I suggest that you do NOTHING ELSE when you are scanning. And after you scan your computer once (and gets the all-clear, no virus message), just do it once in a while. Once every month or 2 is good enough. Way enough. Make sure you do not install more than 1 anti-virus program - that will certainly crash your computer soon if not later.

These supposed free programmes are scam!! They say they are free, but when they discover problems, they ask you to register. The registration is $59.95. With a stretch of imagination one cannot call this FREE ?? I am sick and tired of these empty promises. How about you ? Has anyone come across this sort of thing ?

spybot search and destroy is free no strings attached. I have used it for years in conjuction with other programs that you have to pay for. One that i did pay for was well worth it as it gets somethings that other programs leave behind

i think avg is the only one i think which not load much into your system, or you can say it didn't hang your system at all. I use AVG for a period of 2yrs and i didn't get any problem. Hope you will try avg and sort out your problems.

Well I have also heard this kind of problems by using AVG as your antivirus. What I think is that AVG along with virus also removes some patch file which are necessary for computer running successfully. What I can suggest you is that try Norton Antivirus for antivirus software and Spyware Doctor for spywares. Mind you that norton antivirus take some time to get the computer booted. Once norton sign comes in your clock tray and is fully established your computer will run successfully. Thanks for reading the discussion. Good Bye

Actually AVG is one of the best free programs and beats some of the norton and others hands down. I would say you have a few serious infections going on. Trying running AVG in safe mode. See what it picks up when it is not competing with what is running in your memory.

Be sure you first disable (uninstall) the previous anti virus software, or both will be fighting each other and bring the computer to its knees. I use Panda(software.com)myself. They have a 30 day trial, and you can buy a 1 year - 3 license version via Pricewatch.com for $10.00 The best I have seen!

What AntiVirus were you using before your installed AVG? If it was Norton, its hard to get rid of, and the two can conflict, causing slowness. You have to completely remove Norton, they have a lil program you can get at their site to do this.

The reason the computer slows or freeze's is because the program is checking everything piece by piece, basically the program in this case AVG is looking over the shoulder of the program your trying to load, therefore if you have a few packages open then AVG's job is doubled or quadrupeled. I'm in agreement with AngelWhispers in the fact that AVG is generally the best free antivirus software available. Someone mentioned Spybot which is also a great free anti spyware tool. these are pretty good if your not that technically inclined :)

I use AVG on my laptop and am quite happy with it. It updates frequently and isn't a resource hog like some antivirus programs. Have you run a spyware program lately?

when my friend if you are facing any problem with the antivirus program let me tell you that recently I'm using one antivirus software and I am very happy with the performance of this. nod32 as the one which I'm using recently and I feel it is very powerful yet it uses the display system resources and never gives you a trouble with your system. It has a regular update feature makes you say from the recent threats and also when you're scanning a computer you can easily work on normal software is when you won't even see the difference/recently I detect and I was very happy with the performance of a system came.

I used to use Norton Anti-virus, but several months ago, I switched to AVG only because it is free and I didn't want to pay the license for NAV. My system has been running fine and just as fast as previously before I switched to AVG. The thing I like about AVG is that it does auto-updating quite frequently, so I know my copy is usually up-to-date. I don't think AVG contributes in any significant way to your system's slowness. You did not give details about your system's configuration, so there's no way for anyone to assess if that's where the inefficiencies lie. Your CPU may be old, your harddisk may be low on space, you may not be running on sufficiently good memory, you may not have enough swap space for secondary memory, your data on disk may be very fragmented, you may have many processes running (even unnecessary ones) eating up your resources and slowing your system down, you may have spyware or adware slowing your system down also, etc. and many other possibilities. Again, I doubt any anti-virus program is designed to slow down one's system. You may want to subject your system to a good check to find out the real reason for its sluggish performance.
